NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The College of St. Scholastica broke a 22-22 halftime tie with a 26-point third quarter to defeat the St. Olaf College women's basketball team by a 58-40 score on Monday evening at Skoglund Center.
After shooting just 21.4 percent (9-for-42) in the opening half, St. Scholastica (7-8, 4-6 MIAC) connected on 61.1 percent (11-for-18) of its field-goal attempts while outscoring St. Olaf (2-12, 1-9 MIAC) by a 26-11 margin in the decisive third quarter. The loss snapped the Oles' four-game winning streak in the series since the Saints joined the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC).

Paige Yagodinski was the lone double-figure scorer for St. Olaf with 10 points on just 3-for-20 shooting from the field, including going 1-for-11 from three-point range. First year
Chloee Smith had seven points and eight rebounds, while junior
Ziling Zhen pulled down a career-high 11 rebounds in the loss. The Oles' 40 points were a season-low total as was the team's 25.5 percent (14-for-55) field-goal shooting.
Hope Carlson came off the bench to score 18 points on 7-for-15 shooting to go with four rebounds and five steals for St. Scholastica, which shot just 32.4 percent (24-for-74) from the field and 15.8 percent (3-for-19) from behind the arc in the win. Kloey Lind added a 17-point, 15-rebound double-double for the visitors, who committed just nine turnovers compared to 21 for St. Olaf. The Saints also outscored the Oles by a 40-12 margin in the paint, a 21-6 margin in points off turnovers, and an 18-3 margin in fast-break points.
Neither team led by more than five points in a low-scoring first half that ended with the teams tied at 22-22. A layup by Lind with 1:23 remaining gave St. Scholastica the largest lead of the half at 22-17 before St. Olaf scored the final five points of the half. Junior
Sarah Tangen connected on a three-pointer with 40 seconds to go and Smith followed with a put-back at the buzzer to tie the game for the sixth time in the half.
The visitors started the third quarter by hitting six of their first seven shots to open up a 35-26 lead with 5:48 to go in the quarter and pushed their lead to 48-33 after three quarters on a three-pointer by Katie Vaske in the closing seconds. After going 0-for-13 from behind the arc in the first half, St. Scholastica made both of its three-point attempts in the third quarter and had 16 of its 26 points in the paint.
In the fourth, the Saints led by as many as 24 before settling for the 18-point win. First year
Kyla Elsbury scored her first collegiate points with a baseline jumper in the final minute for the Oles.
St. Olaf visits Macalester College for a 7 p.m. start on Wednesday, Jan. 17 at Leonard Center.
