Third-quarter push not enough for women's basketball at Macalester

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's basketball team used a big third quarter to get back in the game before falling 58-47 to Macalester College on the road on Wednesday night at Leonard Center.

After trailing 31-17 at the half, St. Olaf (2-13, 1-10 MIAC) put together a 21-point third quarter to get within seven points heading to the fourth but could not complete the comeback, as Macalester (8-7, 5-6 MIAC) held on for its third win over the Oles this season. The Scots were just 1-for-6 from three-point range in the win but outscored the Oles by a 40-26 margin in the paint.

Junior Paige Yagodinski matched her season high with 14 points on 6-for-13 shooting for St. Olaf while also tying for the team lead with six rebounds. All three of Yagodinski's 14-point performances have come in the last seven games. Yagodinski was the lone double-figure scorer for the Oles, as junior Sarah Tangen had eight points and first years Bree Wilkerson and Joy Brandenstein added seven each off the bench.

Peyton Starks shot 9-for-18 from the field and led all scorers with 19 points for Macalester, which got 14 points from Katherine Norquist and 10 off the bench from Nicole Norton, who was 3-for-3 from the field and 4-for-4 from the free-throw line.

The Scots raced out to a 12-2 lead over the first six minutes of the game before the Oles countered with a 6-0 run to get back within four at 12-8. Wilkerson capped a five-point opening quarter with a three-pointer with 19 seconds remaining to cut Macalester's lead to 16-11 after one.

Starks and Norquist combined for 13 of the Scots' 15 second-quarter points, and Macalester limited St. Olaf to six points on 3-for-12 shooting in the quarter to push its lead to 31-17 at the half. The hosts were 14-for-28 (50.0 percent) from the field in the opening half, while the Oles shot just 8-for-25 (32.0 percent).

St. Olaf heated up in the third quarter, shooting 8-for-13 (61.5 percent) from the field to outscore Macalester by a 21-14 margin and climb to within seven points at 45-38 heading to the fourth. Yagodinski scored 10 of her 14 points in the quarter to lead the Oles' surge. Consecutive buckets from junior Ziling Zhen and Tangen brought St. Olaf's deficit to juts six at 48-42 with 7:26 to go in the fourth quarter, but that was as close as the Oles could get down the stretch.

St. Olaf visits Saint Mary's University for a 1 p.m. tip-off on Saturday, Jan. 20.
