DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Olaf College men's hockey team overcame a 3-1 third-period deficit in a 3-3 tie at the eighth-ranked College of St. Scholastica before the Saints grabbed the extra point in a shootout on Friday night at Mars Lakeview Arena.
St. Scholastica (12-3-1, 5-1-1 MIAC) held a 3-1 lead in the third period before junior defenseman
Connor Kalthoff scored twice in the final 12-plus minutes to help St. Olaf (7-8-3, 3-4-2 MIAC) extend the game to overtime. After neither team scored in the 3-on-3 extra session, the Saints went 2-for-2 and the Oles went 0-for-2 in the shootout.
Kalthoff's two third-period goals marked the first two-goal game of his collegiate career, which came in his 74th game. First year
Tyler Green opened the scoring for the Oles in the first five minutes, while sophomore
Jonathan Panisa handed out a pair of assists. St. Scholastica entered the game 6-0-0 on its home ice this season.
St. Olaf jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on Green's second goal of the season, as the first year fired the puck in over the blocker of Jack Bostedt at the 4:32 mark on a 2-on-1 off an assist from Panisa. The Oles nearly carried the 1-0 lead into the first intermission, but Tristan Shewchuk scored his first goal of the night with 8.1 seconds remaining in the period to tie it at 1-1 after one.
Shewchuk added his second goal of the game just seconds after the second of back-to-back power plays expired for St. Scholastica, scoring at 14:08 of the middle period. Leading 2-1 after two, the Saints extended their lead to 3-1 early in the third when Filimon Ledenkov scored off a cross-ice pass from Carsen Richels at the 6:10 mark of the third.
St. Olaf fought back after the Ledenkov goal, however, as Kalthoff fired a shot from straight on just inside the blue line for his first of the night just 1:35 later to cut the Oles' deficit back to one. Kalthoff completed his two-goal final period at 16:13 of the third, scoring from the right circle off a give-and-go with senior
Troy Bowditch to tie the game at 3-3.
Both teams had opportunities to win the game in the five-minute overtime. The best chance of the extra session fell to Shewchuk a minute and a half in, but junior
Thomas Lalonde denied Shewchuk his hat trick on a breakaway. Lalonde made four saves in the overtime, while Bostedt made three.
In the shootout, Panisa and Green were unable to get the puck past Bostedt on their two attempts, while Ledenkow and Jacob Seitz converted their attempts to give the Saints the extra point. St. Olaf outshot St. Scholastica by a 30-25 margin in the game, as Lalonde made 22 saves and Bostedt had 27 stops.
The two teams conclude their series on Saturday, Jan. 20 at 5 p.m. at St. Olaf Ice Arena.
