Shorthanded men's basketball downed at buzzer at Saint Mary's

WINONA, Minn. – Jabari Sawyer drove the length of the court for the game-winning layup with 0.8 seconds remaining, as Saint Mary's University gained a split with the St. Olaf College men's basketball team with a 74-72 win on Saturday afternoon at Saint Mary's Gym.

St. Olaf (8-9, 7-5 MIAC) trailed 72-68 with 1:00 remaining before senior Connor Martin made a pair of layups to tie the game with seven seconds to go. Out of a timeout, Saint Mary's (4-13, 3-9 MIAC) rushed the ball up court, and Sawyer got all the way to the rim for the game-winning layup. With less than a second to go, the Oles got the ball in in the backcourt but could not muster anything more than a desperation three-quarter-court heave.

With St. Olaf playing without sophomore Kobe Kirk, the team's second-leading scorer at 17.6 points per game, senior Caleb Greer scored a career-high 19 points on 6-for-10 shooting from the field, 3-for-5 shooting from three-point range, and 4-for-5 shooting at the free-throw line. The 19-point night was just the senior's second collegiate game in double figures.

After a scoreless first half, Martin scored all 16 of his points after the break, finishing the afternoon 6-for-12 from the field and 4-for-5 at the charity stripe. Fifth-year senior Josh Albers stepped up with a career-high 13 points, six rebounds, and three assists while going 5-for-8 from the field and 3-for-6 from behind the arc.

Cameron Mallory registered a game-high 20 points and pulled down seven rebounds to pace Saint Mary's, which got 16 points and nine rebounds from Breyton Buysman in the win. Owen Ziegler knocked down 3-of-4 three-pointers and 6-of-6 free throws to score 15 points, while Sawyer capped his 13-point afternoon with the game-winning layup.

St. Olaf jumped out to a quick 9-2 lead after an early three-pointer by junior Dashiel Walker to start the scoring and back-to-back three-pointers by Greer. Six minutes in, a three-point play by Greer put the Oles ahead 12-4, which was the largest lead of the opening half for either team.

After trailing by six with less than six minutes to go in the half, Saint Mary's closed the half on an extended 17-6 run to take a 38-33 lead at the break. The Cardinals enjoyed a 22-10 edge in points in the paint in the opening 20 minutes, as Greer and Mallory led their respective teams with 13 points apiece in a first half that included 11 lead changes and nine ties.

Neither team led by more than six points in the second half, but St. Olaf only grabbed the lead on three occasions. After the Cardinals took a six-point lead a minute and a half in, the Oles went ahead on a three-point play by junior Jaylen Hannah and a jumper by Martin before the midway point of the half.

With five minutes remaining, St. Olaf took its final lead of the game at 63-62 on a layup by Martin and, two minutes later, Martin tied the game at 66-66 with 3:07 left with another layup. The Cardinals broke the tie with buckets by Mallory and Buysman and held onto the four-point lead until Martin made back-to-back shots in the final 40 seconds to tie it back up at 72-72 with seven seconds to go, setting up Sawyer's heroics.

After seeing its four-game winning streak snapped, St. Olaf heads to Gustavus Adolphus College on Wednesday, Jan. 24 for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
