Women's hockey can't overcome early deficit at St. Scholastica

DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's hockey team yielded two goals in less than a minute in the opening period and could not recover in a 3-1 loss to the College of St. Scholastica on Saturday at Mars Lakeview Arena.

St. Scholastica (7-9-1, 6-3-1 MIAC) scored twice in the span of 44 seconds late in the opening period before sophomore Solvei Berg-Messerole made it a one-goal game for St. Olaf (6-11-0, 0-10-0 MIAC) with a power-play goal late in the second period. The Saints held onto the lead in the third and added an empty-netter with 1:42 to go to complete the sweep after a 2-1 win the night before in Northfield.

Allie Bussey and Sara Parent netted goals at the 15:11 and 15:55 marks of the opening period to give the Saints a two-goal cushion after 20 minutes. The hosts maintained the two-goal advantage until Berg-Messerole tallied her seventh goal of the season at 18:33 of the third with the Oles on the power play, as Berg-Messerole snuck a shot in from the inner edge of the right circle after getting the puck from junior Hannah Metric and sophomore MaKenna Beaver. The goal extended Berg Messerole's point streak to six games.

St. Olaf had a power play midway through the third period and generated four shots on goal but could not find a tying goal. The Oles killed off a minor penalty that expired with 4:30 to go to keep it a one-goal margin, but the Saints struck shortly after St. Olaf emptied its net in search of a second goal.

Ashlea Arvidson stopped 26 of the 27 shots she faced for St. Scholastica to pick up the win in a game where St. Olaf owned a slender 27-26 advantage in shots on goal. In just her second start of the season, sophomore Devon Cole took the loss after making 10 saves in the opening period. Sophomore Hannah Fritz stopped all 13 shots she was faced with over the final two periods.

Still in search of its first conference win of the season, St. Olaf visits Concordia-Moorhead for next weekend's series against the Cobbers. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 26 and 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 27.
