MOORHEAD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's hockey team scored twice in less than two minutes in the opening period on its way to a 2-1 victory over Concordia-Moorhead for its first Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) win of the season on Friday night at Moorhead Sports Center.
Junior
Rachel Wieland and first year
Andi Huselid scored 1:27 apart for St. Olaf (7-11-0, 1-10-0 MIAC) in the opener period, and the Oles held Concordia (5-12-1, 1-9-1 MIAC) to a single second-period goal in the victory. The win was the fourth in a row for St. Olaf in the series between the two programs, as the Oles have outscored the Cobbers by a 12-3 margin in the last four encounters.
Wieland opened the scoring with her fourth goal of the season at the 8:55 mark of the first period. After sophomore
Emma Heath got the puck back to senior
Lexie Ligday at the left point, Ligday threaded the puck to a cutting Wieland between the circles. Wieland weaved through a couple of Cobbers before finishing off her own rebound.
Just 1:27 later, Huselid took advantage of a misplay behind the Concordia net to stuff the puck in from close range for the second goal of the first year's collegiate career. The Cobbers halved their deficit at 6:33 of the second period on an unassisted goal by Morgan Sauvageau, but that was the lone goal the hosts could muster on the night.
Sophomore
Hannah Fritz earned her eighth victory of the season by stopping 25-of-26 shots for St. Olaf in the win, making 12 of her 25 saves in the third period. Hailee Bailey made 17 stops in the loss for Concordia. There were only three power-play opportunities in the game, as the Oles were 0-for-1 and the Cobbers were 1-for-2.
The series finale is set for 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 27 back at Moorhead Sports Center.
