NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College men's basketball team scored the first six points of overtime, but Augsburg University used an 11-0 run in the extra session to claim an 85-76 victory and a series split on Saturday afternoon at Skoglund Center.
After Trent Gomez hit a three-pointer in the closing seconds for Augsburg (7-11, 5-8 MIAC) to send the game to overtime, St. Olaf (8-11, 7-7 MIAC) scored six points in the first 1:20 of overtime to take a 74-68 lead. The visitors proceeded to score the next 11 points while holding the Oles scoreless for nearly three minutes to come away with the win.

Addison Metcalf scored a game-high 19 points for St. Olaf while adding four rebounds, five assists, and six steals. Fifth-year senior
Brendan Kauls matched his season high with 18 points on 7-for-13 shooting to go with eight rebounds, three assists, and two blocks, while sophomore
Kobe Kirk recorded 14 points and six rebounds. The Oles shot just 38.4 percent (28-for-73) from the field in the loss but got 36 points from their bench.
Augsburg had five double-figure scorers in the win, led by a 16-point performance off the bench from Caden Sullivan. Gomez was an efficient 5-for-8 from the field while adding 15 points, six rebounds, and five steals, while Colin Meade hit a pair of big three-pointers in overtime to finish with 15 points despite shooting just 6-for-17 from the field. Will Blascziek recorded 11 points, while Isaac Rabaey compiled 10 points, six rebounds, and eight assists.
Augsburg took a 36-32 lead into the locker room after a first half that included 13 lead changes and saw neither team lead by more than five points. St. Olaf got out to a quick 5-0 lead on a three-pointer by Kirk and a jumper by Kauls for its largest lead of the half, which the Auggies matched in the closing seconds when Blascziek hit a three-pointer. Ryan Warren led all scorers with nine first-half points for the Oles.
In the second half, Augsburg led for 15:08, compared to just 2:25 for St. Olaf, and was up by as many as eight after back-to-back layups by Austin Jentzen with 12:37 remaining. The Oles responded with a 10-4 run that included three-pointers by Metcalf and Kirk to get back within two midway through the half. Trailing 57-55, St. Olaf got a three-point play by Metcalf and a layup by fifth-year senior
Josh Albers to grab a 60-57 lead with 5:15 to go, matching its largest lead of the second half.
Down the stretch, Kauls converted a three-point play with 1:45 on the clock to put the Oles on top 63-61 to start a series of lead changes in the final minutes. After two Gomez free throws swung the Auggies into a 65-64 lead with 33 seconds to play, junior
Jaylen Hannah found Albers for a layup 12 seconds later to put St. Olaf back ahead.
After a stop, Hannah sank two free throws to stretch the Oles' lead to 68-65, but Gomez sank a three-pointer from the top of the key with four seconds left to tie the game. Metcalf got a good look at a three-pointer at the horn, but it hit the back rim.
In overtime, Metcalf found Kauls for a three-point play and followed it up with a three-pointer to create a 74-68 lead for St. Olaf 1:20 in. Augsburg fought back with two three-pointers from Meade in the decisive 11-0 run that put the game out of reach in the final minute of the extra session.
The Oles head across town to face Carleton College on Wednesday, Jan. 31 at 7 p.m.
