Men's hockey falls victim to Concordia's late surge on Hockey Day MN

WARROAD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College men's hockey team yielded three goals late in the third period during a 4-2 loss to Concordia-Moorhead as part of Hockey Day Minnesota 2024 on Friday night at Warroad Athletic Complex.

St. Olaf (8-10-3, 4-6-2 MIAC) led 2-0 after one period and was still up 2-1 with less than five minutes remaining in the third, but Concordia (10-7-2, 5-4-1 MIAC) finished off a sweep by scoring three times in the final 4:03. The game was just the third NCAA Division III men's hockey game to be played as part of the annual Hockey Day Minnesota festivities and was played with a game-time temperature of 27 degrees.

First years Tyler Green and Joey Kennelly gave the Oles a 2-0 lead with goals less than three minutes apart in the opening period, and St. Olaf maintained the two-goal advantage at the first intermission. After Concordia got on the board late in the second to make it 2-1, the Cobbers broke out for three late goals to put the Oles' playoff hopes in significant peril.

After killing off an early penalty, St. Olaf got on the board first when Green tallied his third goal of the season and got into double figures in points at the 7:35 mark of the first period, tucking the puck home from in close off an assist from senior Noah Heisler. Heisler's assist was his 10th of the season, one shy of the team lead.

Midway through the period, the Oles doubled their lead on Kennelly's fourth goal of the season, as the first year fired the puck through traffic from the slot after getting the puck from senior Matthew Pointer on the power play. The goal came on St. Olaf's lone power play of the game.

Concordia halved its deficit late in the second to set up its late third-period rally, as Hanson O'Leary scored from close range at the 17:11 mark to make it a 2-1 game after two. Isaac Henkemeyer-Howe netted a power-play goal at 15:57 of the third to tie the game before Hunter Olson scored goals 1:31 apart over the final 3:02 to seal the victory for the Cobbers.

Senior Lukas Haugen made 20 saves in the loss for St. Olaf, while Matt Fitzgerald picked up the win with a 15-save outing for Concordia. The Oles are off next week before taking on Saint John's University the following week, starting with a 7 p.m. puck drop at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud on Thursday, Feb. 8.
