NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College men's hockey team romped to a 10-0 non-conference victory over Northland College on Senior Night on Saturday evening at St. Olaf Ice Arena.
St. Olaf (7-6-2) scored four times in the first period and six times in the second before shutting it down in the third period to reach double figures in goals for the first time in 7,665 days dating back to an 11-0 win over Bethel University on Jan. 11, 2003. The loss was the 16th in a row for Northland (1-16-0) after the Lumberjacks won their season opener.
St. Olaf's 10-goal outburst marked the highest goal total for a team at St. Olaf Ice Arena and was tied for the fourth-highest scoring output by a men's college hockey team this season. The University of Massachusetts (Division I) and Skidmore College (Division III) both scored 11 goals in a game before top-ranked Hobart College posted a 12-0 win over Castleton University earlier in the day on Saturday.
Prior to the game, the Oles honored their eight-member senior class of
Sam Mudd,
Luke Suter,
Brendan Darby,
Parker Casey,
Troy Bowditch,
Kaz Matsuo,
Noah Heisler, and
Lukas Haugen for their efforts and dedication to the program over their careers. Six of the seven senior skaters had at least one point in the win, while Haugen logged his second collegiate shutout with a 22-save performance.
Fourteen Oles had at least one point and nine recorded multi-point performances in the win. Junior
Connor Kalthoff recorded a career-high four assists for St. Olaf in the win, equaling the most assists in a game by an Ole dating back to at least 2001. Suter and junior
Sean Walsh each registered three assists, while classmate
Cody Sherman logged his first-career three-point game with two goals and one assist to cap a five-point weekend. Darby, Bowditch, and junior
Jonathan Young also scored twice.
After a scoreless opening 11-plus minutes, sophomore
Pavel Karasek got the scoring started for the Oles at the 11:45 mark of the opening period with his first-career goal. Less than a minute later, Young made it 2-0 by turning in a cross-ice pass from Walsh in front. Bowditch got his first goal of the night at 16:12 of the period before Darby added his first goal since opening night with 1:07 remaining to cap the four-goal first period. The Oles' four goals came in the span of 7:08.
St. Olaf continued to light up the scoreboard in the second period, tacking on six goals in the span of 10:37 to reach double figures after 40 minutes. Bowditch and Sherman collected the first two goals of the period just 2:04 apart before Matsuo notched his first-career goal at the 12:18 mark in his 56th game as an Ole. Sherman, Young, and Darby all scored on a five-minute power play following a major penalty later in the period.
After racking up 42 shots on goal in the first two periods, St. Olaf took just four shots on goal in the third, opting to dump the puck in deep on most of its zone entries. Haugen kept Northland scoreless by making 18 of his 22 saves over the final two periods, as the shot count ended 46-22 in favor of the Oles. Viktor Wennberg had 30 saves in the first 35:43 for the visitors before Mitch Taylor stopped all six shots he faced over the remainder of the game.
St. Olaf returns to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play with a series against Saint Mary's University next weekend, beginning with a 7 p.m. puck drop in Winona on Friday, Jan. 12.
