NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College volleyball team swept crosstown-rival Carleton College for the third time in the last five meetings to reclaim "The Bell" with a 25-19, 25-14, 25-22 victory over the Knights on Friday evening at Skoglund Center.
After seeing its four-match winning streak snapped with a five-set loss across town last year, St. Olaf (13-4, 3-1 MIAC) limited Carleton (10-8, 1-3 MIAC) to a .091 attack percentage on its way to the sweep. With the win, the Oles regained possession of the cowbell traveling trophy awarded to the winning team of the crosstown rivalry after a brief hiatus.
St. Olaf racked up a season-high 13 aces in just three sets, getting four from junior
Paige Christophersen, three from senior
Kathryn Deist, and two from junior
Morgan Ryan, in addition to one apiece from four others. The Oles held the Knights to a .029 attack percentage over the final two sets of the sweep, led by a 25-dig effort from Ryan in the back row.
Junior
Lilah Van Scoyoc was the lone hitter on either team to reach double figures in kills, doing so for the 11th match in a row with a match-high 11 kills. First year
Mehsa Krause added nine kills with a .389 attack percentage. Sophomore
Skylar Fildew handed out 18 assists for the Oles, while Christophersen had 16 to go with four aces and six digs.
St. Olaf broke an early 2-2 tie with a 4-0 run in the opening set and never looked back in the 25-19 set victory. Deist delivered back-to-back aces in the early run, and Krause and Van Scoyoc picked up four kills apiece in the set. After trailing by seven at 19-15, the Knights got within four at 19-15 but could not get any closer.
The Oles held the Knights to a -.071 attack percentage in a lopsided 25-14 win in set two. After trailing 7-5 early, St. Olaf won six of the next seven points to take the lead for good at 11-8 before pulling away with another 6-1 run after Carleton got to within 11-10.
The third set featured 18 ties and 12 lead changes, as neither team lead by more than three points in the set. St. Olaf's 9-6 advantage in the early stages was the largest lead of the set until the final margin of three. Carleton held a 22-21 lead after back-to-back attack errors by the Oles, but St. Olaf responded by winning the final four points to wrap up the sweep.
The Oles will turn around and hit the road for a match at Augsburg University on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. in Minneapolis.
