Jelinek's 10 kills not enough for volleyball against St. Kate's

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College volleyball team was swept by visiting St. Catherine University by scores of 25-15, 25-18, 25-23 in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) action on Wednesday evening on Faculty/Staff Appreciation Night at Skoglund Center.

St. Olaf (13-6, 3-3 MIAC) suffered its second consecutive MIAC sweep and saw its 12-match winning streak in the series against St. Kate's (15-7, 5-1 MIAC) come to an end with the loss. The Wildcats hit .274 in the win and limited the Oles to a .121 clip over the three sets.

Junior Holly Jelinek reached double figures in kills for the first time in her collegiate career with 10 kills while hitting .273 for St. Olaf. Sophomore Lilah Van Scoyoc was in double figures for the 13th match in a row with 10 kills to tie Jelinek for the team lead.

Junior Morgan Ryan led the Oles defensively with 17 digs to continue her streak of recording at least 10 digs in every match this season. Senior Kathryn Deist digs, while sophomore Maren Miller was in on a team-high four blocks to go with her seven kills.

St. Kate's had 16 kills and three errors to hit .382 in the opening set and took control early by getting out to a 5-2 lead. Lexie Petrick had six of her match-high 16 kills in the set. Petrick and Liz Rosen both logged double-doubles for the Wildcats, combining for 27 kills and 26 digs.

The Oles raced out to 4-0 lead at the start of the second set and were up 8-3 before the Wildcats won 21 of the next 28 points to bring up a string of set points at 24-15. St. Olaf saved three set points in a row – two on kills by Jelinek – before St. Kate's closed out the set on a kill by Petrick.

After the first two sets included just four ties, the teams were tied 11 times in the third before the visitors finished off the sweep with a late push. Two kills by Jelinek in a three-point span put the Oles two points away from extending the match with a 23-21 lead, but the Wildcats won the next four points to end the match.

St. Olaf continues a four-match homestand with a non-conference match against Luther College on Friday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. on Attack Cancer Night at Skoglund Center.
