NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The regionally-ranked St. Olaf College men's soccer team remained unbeaten in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play with a 1-1 tie against Augsburg University on Saturday afternoon at Rolf Mellby Field.
After Augsburg (8-4-5, 2-2-4 MIAC) broke a scoreless deadlock in the 50th minute, junior
Dimitri Nair equalized for St. Olaf (10-4-2, 6-0-1 MIAC) a little over 10 minutes later with his fourth goal of the season. Neither team was able to find a tying goal, although first year
Charlie Piller nearly won it for the Oles in the final seconds, but Frankie Pinto got down to stop Piller's shot from the top of the box near the lower-left corner.
With the tie and Gustavus Adolphus College's 1-0 victory over Concordia-Moorhead, the Oles and Gusties are tied atop the MIAC standings with 19 points with identical 6-0-1 records ahead of next Wednesday's meeting in St. Peter. The Oles were ranked No. 3 in this week's United Soccer Coaches Region IX poll and received votes nationally.
The two teams combined for 17 shots in the opening half, but neither could find the breakthrough. Augsburg eventually got the game's first goal in the 50th minute when Muhammed Keita sent a looping header into the top-right corner off a cross from Joseph Swallen following a short corner.
St. Olaf answered less than 12 minutes later, however, when Nair fired a left-footed shot into the right side of the goal after fifth-year senior
Clemente Arcuch Puig found Nair on the right. Arcuch Puig's assist was his seventh of the season, moving him into a tie for the team lead with first year
Lucas Montera.
St. Olaf held a 21-17 advantage in shots and a 9-6 edge in shots on goal in the game. Junior
Jack Hobday made five saves in his first collegiate start for the Oles, while Pinto stopped eight shots for the Auggies.
Wednesday's top-of-the-conference meeting between St. Olaf and Gustavus will kick off at 3:30 p.m. in St. Peter.
