Volleyball improves to 5-1 at home by sweeping Macalester

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College volleyball team improved to 5-1 at home this season by sweeping Macalester College by scores of 25-17, 25-22, 25-8 on Wednesday evening at Skoglund Center.

St. Olaf (16-6, 4-3 MIAC) only faced two one-point deficits in the entirety of the match on its way to sweeping Macalester (10-12, 2-5 MIAC) for the fourth time in the last six meetings. The Oles hit .264 in the match and held the Scots to a .075 clip while holding advantages of 7-2 in aces and 68-51 in digs.

First year Mehsa Krause picked up a match-high 11 kills for St. Olaf, which got nine kills from first year Carlie Beckstrand and seven kills from sophomore Maren Miller. Miller and junior Dori Hobbie combined for 13 kills out of the middle and hit a combined .600 in the victory.

Junior Paige Christophersen recorded a match-high 22 assists and added nine digs, while junior Skylar Fildew collected 18 assists and six digs. Sophomore Lilah Van Scoyoc compiled six kills, a match-high five aces, and a team-high 17 digs, while junior Morgan Ryan added 14 digs, five assists, and an ace.

St. Olaf jumped out to an early 6-1 lead in the opening set and never trailed en route to a 25-17 set victory. The Oles hit .270 in the set and limited the Scots to a .054 mark while getting multiple kills from four different sources in the set.

In the second set, the Oles built a 15-9 lead and were up 24-18 before having to hold off a late charge by the Scots. Trailing by six, Macalester won four points in a row to stay alive in the set before Hobbie ended the set with her fourth kill of the set.

St. Olaf breezed through the third set by hitting .378 with 15 kills and just one attack error, led by five kills from Krause. Like the first set, the Oles surged out to a 6-1 lead early and never trailed in the set.

Next up for St. Olaf is a trip to Gustavus Adolphus College on Friday, Oct. 25 for a 7 p.m. start. The Oles will head to UW-Eau Claire the following day for matches against the Blugolds and UW-Stout.
