Women's soccer blanks UW-Superior behind Wallace's first collegiate goal

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's soccer team closed out its non-conference schedule with a 1-0 victory over Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) regular-season champion UW-Superior on Tuesday afternoon at Rolf Mellby Field.

In the first-ever meeting between the two programs, senior Annika Wallace netted her first collegiate goal in the 30th minute to give St. Olaf (12-2-3) the win over UW-Superior (11-7-0). The Oles' 12 victories this season are the joint second-highest total in program history and one shy of the single-season program record of 13 set in 2010. The win improved St. Olaf's record on its home turf this season to 7-1-1.

Wallace tallied the lone goal of the game 30 minutes in by tapping the ball in at the back post after sophomore Roxanne Rundle beat a defender to the end line on the right and sent the ball across to Wallace. The assist was Rundle's first of the season and the fourth of her career, as Wallace found the back of the net for the first time in her 39th collegiate game.

St. Olaf outshot UW-Superior, which won the UMAC regular-season title for the fourth season in a row, by a 23-5 margin overall and an 8-4 difference in shots on goal. Quinn Clark made seven saves for the Yellowjackets, while first year Ava Williams picked up her fourth shutout in seven collegiate starts with four saves to move to 5-1-1 on the season.

The Oles threatened to get on the board twice in quick succession in the fourth minute. Sophomore Wren VanDeWalker fired a shot off the crossbar from the right side of the box and, seconds later, junior Cat Duffy-Shaw sent a shot just over the bar from the top of the box. St. Olaf generated another scoring opportunity in the 16th minute when sophomore Emily Johnson drew a save from Clark with a left-footed effort from the left side of the box.

Wallace's goal put St. Olaf on top at halftime after the Oles outshot the Yellowjackets by an 11-2 margin in the opening 45 minutes. St. Olaf took 12 of the second half's 15 shots but was unable to add to its lead thanks, in part, to two standout saves by Clark.

In the 63rd minute, Johnson raced in on goal after robbing the ball off a UW-Superior defender, but Clark saved Johnson's effort out for a corner. With eight minutes to go, first year Rachel Anderson hit the right post with a long-distance shot with Clark well off her line. Inside the final three minutes, junior Paige Hummel flicked the ball in behind for Anderson, but Clark raced off her line to get piece of Anderson's shot.

Already locked into the No. 4 seed for the upcoming Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Playoffs, St. Olaf will close out the regular season against Concordia-Moorhead at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2 at Rolf Mellby Field.
