Women's soccer blanks Cobbers to match single-season wins record

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's soccer team closed out its regular-season schedule with a 2-0 victory over Concordia-Moorhead in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play on Saturday afternoon at Rolf Mellby Field.

In a scoreless game, St. Olaf (13-2-3, 7-2-2 MIAC) broke through with two goals in the final 30-plus minutes to blank Concordia (8-7-1, 4-6-1 MIAC). The Oles entered the game already locked into the No. 4 seed for next week's MIAC Playoffs, while the loss eliminated the Cobbers from playoff contention. The win was St. Olaf's 13th of the season, tying the 2010 team for the most victories in a season in program history.

With the game still scoreless, the Oles broke through in the 60th minute when senior Katie Sewell played a ball in behind for sophomore Emily Johnson, who dribbled around the Cobbers' goalkeeper and tapped the ball home to open the scoring. The goal was the sixth of the season for Johnson, while Sewell collected her second assist of the year.

St. Olaf doubled its lead in the 76th minute when junior Paige Hummel slotted home a rebound from inside the six-year box after Kaitlin Petrich stopped a shot by junior Chloe Valleau for Petrich's second close-range save in a matter of seconds. Hummel's goal was her first of the season, while Valleau registered her first assist of the fall.

Petrich kept the Cobbers in the game with a 14-save afternoon, as St. Olaf outshot Concordia by a 21-9 margin overall and a 16-5 count in shots on goal. The Oles racked up 10 shots in the first 17-plus minutes of the first half, including a fifth-minute effort from senior Sadie Klassen that hit the crossbar, but were forced to wait until the second half to get on the board.

As the No. 4 seed, St. Olaf will host No. 5 seed Augsburg University in the quarterfinals of the MIAC Playoffs on Monday, Nov. 4 at 2 p.m. The Oles won the regular-season meeting by a 3-0 score at Rolf Mellby Field on Oct. 19.
