Women's soccer edges Augsburg in MIAC Quarterfinals, sets new single-season wins record

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The fourth-seeded St. Olaf College women's soccer team edged fifth-seeded Augsburg University by a 1-0 margin in the quarterfinals of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Women's Soccer Playoffs on Monday afternoon at Rolf Mellby Field.

Junior Katie Beaudry headed in a corner from classmate Cat Duffy-Shaw in the 38th minute for the lone goal of the game to send St. Olaf (14-2-3) past Augsburg (8-5-5) and into the semifinals. With the victory, the Oles established a new program record with their 14th win of the season, breaking a tie with the 2010 team. The win was also the second in program history for St. Olaf in the tournament, with the other coming in 2022.

St. Olaf will head to top-seeded St. Catherine University in the semifinals on Thursday, Nov. 7 in a 2 p.m. kickoff in St. Paul. Third-seeded Saint Mary's University blanked sixth-seeded Gustavus Adolphus College in the other quarterfinal on Monday to book a trip to second-seeded Carleton College in the semis.

After first year Ava Williams made a pair of saves in the first 20-plus minutes to prevent Augsburg from taking an early lead, Beaudry guided a header into the left side of the net off Duffy-Shaw's corner from the right. The goal was Beaudry's fourth of the season, all of which have come on corner kicks from Duffy-Shaw. Duffy-Shaw's assist was her sixth of the season and the 14th of her career, totals which rank tied for sixth and for fifth, respectively, in recorded program history.

Before Beaudry's goal, Williams made a diving save to stop a header by Megan Hensel that was headed towards the lower-left corner off a corner kick in the 10th minute. Ten minutes later, the first year leaped to snag Jayla Ponce's curling left-footed shot from the right side of the box. Those two stops were half of Williams' four saves in the win, as she moved to 7-1-1 on the season with her fifth shutout in nine starts.

As a team, St. Olaf added another shutout to its single-season program record, which now stands at 13. The victory also moved the Oles to 9-1-1 on the season at home, with the nine wins tying the 2009 team's total for the most in a season in recorded program history.

The Oles enjoyed 62 percent of the possession and more than doubled-up the Auggies in shots (15-7), although Augsburg held a 4-3 edge in shots on goal. St. Olaf also had 10 of the game's 11 corner kicks, including the one that proved to be the difference between the two teams.
