ST. PAUL, Minn. – The fourth-seeded St. Olaf College women's soccer team saw its season come to an end with a 3-1 loss at top-seeded St. Catherine University in the semifinals of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Women's Soccer Playoffs on Thursday afternoon at Wildcat Soccer Field.
St. Olaf (14-3-3) fell behind 1-0 in the opening 10 minutes but rallied to tie the game on a 17th-minute goal by sophomore
Emily Johnson. After the two teams were tied at halftime, St. Kate's (13-2-4) broke the tie with two goals in the space of less than five minutes after the Oles were reduced to 10 players with just over 20 minutes to go.
In its first season under head coach
Molly Fiedler, St. Olaf established a new single-season program record with its 14 victories and recorded its second postseason win since the establishment of the MIAC Playoffs in 2003. The game brought an end to the careers of the Oles' nine seniors:
Bella Kornwolf,
Sadie Klassen,
Katie Sewell,
Annika Wallace,
Quinn Riley,
Mia Van der Heide,
Faith Yi,
Linnea Askegaard, and
Kalle Munger.
St. Kate's, which is in search of its fourth MIAC Playoff crown in a row after sharing the regular-season title with Carleton College, grabbed an early lead when Ari Green slotted the ball into the lower-right corner of the net from the top of the box following a turnover. St. Olaf struck back quickly, however, when Johnson fired the ball into the top-right corner from the top of the box after getting the ball from junior
Abbie Manhard in the 17th minute.
The Wildcats outshot the Oles by a 14-1 margin overall in the opening half, but the two teams went into the break tied at a goal apiece. Both teams hit the woodwork in the first half of the second half, with Jaidyn Richter doing so for the hosts in the 49th minute and Van der Heide doing so 66 minutes in for St. Olaf.
St. Kate's took advantage of its extra player over the final 20-plus minutes with two goals from Kallan Tuominen to advance to the championship game on Saturday. Tuominen broke the 1-1 tie with a header at the back post in the 70th minute before sliding a shot home four minutes later to give the Wildcats a two-goal cushion.
For the game, St. Kate's owned a 24-7 lead in shots, which included a 10-4 edge in shots on goal. First year
Ava Williams made seven saves for the Oles, while Kate Praetz had three for the Wildcats, who will host third-seeded Saint Mary's University on Saturday for the title.
