UW-Platteville stymies men's soccer to end Oles' unbeaten streak

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The St. Olaf College men's soccer team dropped a regionally-ranked non-conference matchup to UW-Platteville by a 1-0 margin on Tuesday evening at Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium.

UW-Platteville (7-1-2) got the lone goal of the game from Alex Wano off a corner kick in the 37th minute to break the seven-game unbeaten streak (6-0-1) of St. Olaf (8-4-1). The Oles were ranked No. 3 in this week's United Soccer Coaches Region IX poll and received votes nationally, while the Pioneers came in at No. 6 in the region this week.

In a game with few clear-cut scoring opportunities for either team, Wano tallied the game's only goal in the final 10 minutes of the opening half for the Pioneers by turning the ball in from just outside the goal line after UW-Platteville won the first two headers following a corner kick. The goal was just the third for the Pioneers in the all-time series between the two programs in the 12th head-to-head matchup.

St. Olaf fashioned a couple of scoring chances in the final 20 minutes through senior Shea Bechtel. With 19 minutes remaining, Seth Aiken used his 6' 8" frame to leap and keep out a Bechtel shot headed towards the top-left corner. Aiken again denied Bechtel's shot from the middle of the box with six minutes to go by getting down low quickly to hold the shot.

The Oles held advantages in every offensive stat category in the game, outshooting the Pioneers 15-10 overall and 5-3 in shots on goal, holding nine of the game's 13 corner kicks, and enjoying 59 percent of the possession but were shut out for the first time since Sept. 5. Aiken recorded five saves for UW-Platteville, while senior Peter Forseth had two for St. Olaf.

In the team's return to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play, the Oles will face Hamline University at home on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 3:30 p.m.
