WAVERLY, Iowa – The St. Olaf College men's basketball team had five scorers in double figures in an 83-80 loss to UW-Whitewater on Saturday afternoon in the consolation game of the Buzz Levick Tournament at Levick Arena.

AJ Uhl all scored between 10 and 19 points for St. Olaf (1-3), which shot over 50.0 percent in both halves and finished at 54.9 percent (28-for-51) for the game. UW-Whitewater (2-1) had four double-digit scorers of its own and shot 56.9 percent (33-for-58) to claim the victory in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
After the tournament, Kirk was named to the five-member All-Tournament Team after averaging 21.0 points per game on 50.0 percent (15-for-30) shooting in St. Olaf's two games.
Kirk led St. Olaf with 19 points on 6-for-12 shooting from the field and 6-for-8 shooting at the free-throw line. Coming off his first collegiate double-double the night before, Mertes matched his career high with 16 points while going 3-for-4 from three-point range and pulling down a team-high five rebounds. Walker was an efficient 5-for-7 from the field to score a career-high 14 points, Willis hit all five of his shots to add 12, and Uhl recorded 10 points.
Both teams shot over 58.0 percent in the opening half, as UW-Whitewater took a 47-39 lead at the break. The Oles led for most of the first four minutes before the Warhawks took control. UW-Whitewater used a 7-0 run to build a 24-16 lead with 12:26 to go in the half and opened up a double-digit advantage five minutes later. The Warhawks led by as many as 15 before Willis poured in four late points to trim St. Olaf's deficit to eight.
A three-pointer by Willis 4:36 into the second half brought the Oles within five at 57-52, but the Warhawks stretched their lead back to 12 four minutes later. UW-Whitewater maintained at least an eight-point lead until a jumper by Willis and a pair of free throws by Walker made it an 82-78 game with 1:16 to go.
After a turnover by the Warhawks, Walker found Kirk for a layup with 35 seconds to go to reduce the deficit to two. UW-Whitewater split a pair of free throws on its next possession before Kirk got a look at a three-pointer in the final seconds that would not go.
St. Olaf will continue non-conference play against UW-River Falls in the Oles' home opener on Wednesday, Nov. 20 at 7 p.m. at Bob Gelle Court.
