Men's hockey can't dig out of hole in series finale against Gustavus

ST. PETER, Minn. – The St. Olaf College men's hockey team fell victim to a goal-scoring barrage by Gustavus Adolphus College in a 6-5 loss to the Gusties on Saturday evening at Don Roberts Ice Rink.

After limiting Gustavus (1-3-0, 1-1-0 MIAC) to one goal in a 3-1 home win on Friday night, St. Olaf (2-3-1, 1-1-0 MIAC) yielded six goals over the first 31:46 to fall in a 6-3 hole after two periods. The Oles attempted a comeback in the third period with a goal early in the period and an extra-attacker goal with 1:00 to go but came up a goal short.

Sophomore Tony Leahy, senior Connor Kalthoff, junior Jonathan Panisa, and senor Ben Luscko all had multi-point games for St. Olaf in the loss. Leahy had a career-high three assists, Kalthoff recorded two assists, and Panisa and Luscko added a goal and an assist apiece. Jack Suchy and Jack Wineman carried the load offensively for Gustavus with four-point nights, as Suchy had three goals and an assist and Wineman collected a goal and three assists.

Goals from Nate Stone and Suchy gave Gustavus a 2-0 lead just over four minutes in before Efraimidis tallied his first collegiate goal at the 13:26 mark to make it a 2-1 game after one period. After Suchy got his second of the night early in the second, Kennelly lit the lamp for the first time this season at the 5:07 mark to bring the Oles' deficit back to one.

Gustavus got the goal back just 47 seconds later and scored again midway through the second to go up 5-2. A power-play goal from Panisa just 1:10 after the Gusties' fifth goal reduced St. Olaf's deficit to two, but Suchy completed his hat trick just 15 seconds after Panisa's tally to make it 6-3 after two.

Luscko redirected a Kalthoff shot at 6:23 of the third to give the Oles hope of a third-period comeback. The score stayed at 6-4 until Green grabbed his third of the year with exactly a minute remaining with an extra-attacker goal just seconds after St. Olaf vacated its net. The Oles pushed for the tying goal in the remaining minute but were unable to complete the rally.

Gustavus owned a 25-23 advantage in shots on goal in the game, which included just one penalty by each team. Marko Belak claimed the win with 18 saves for the Gusties, while first year Matthew Malin and junior Tyler Laureault combined for 19 saves for the Oles. Malin had 11 saves before being chased after the sixth Gustavus goal. Laureault stopped all eight shots he faced over the remainder of the game.

St. Olaf will open its series against Saint John's University on Friday, Nov. 22 at 7 p.m. at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.
