Men's soccer grabs share of MIAC regular-season title with 6-0 win over Cobbers

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The regionally-ranked St. Olaf College men's soccer team claimed a share of its third Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) regular-season title in four seasons with a 6-0 victory over Concordia-Moorhead on Saturday afternoon at Rolf Mellby Field.

St. Olaf (12-4-3, 8-0-2 MIAC) completed its third unbeaten run through the conference in four seasons – after never having done so prior to 2021 – by scoring four first-half goals on its way to blanking Concordia (1-13-3, 0-8-2 MIAC). The Oles entered the day tied atop the MIAC standings with Gustavus Adolphus College (14-0-3, 8-0-2 MIAC) and both teams eased to wins over the bottom two teams in the conference standings, resulting in co-regular-season champions.

The MIAC regular-season championship is the ninth in program history for St. Olaf (1984, 1992, 1998, 2004, 2011, 2014, 2021, 2023, 2024). The Oles will be the No. 2 seed in next week's MIAC Playoffs after losing out on the top seed on the fourth tiebreaker. St. Olaf and Gustavus tied their head-to-head meeting and had identical results against the rest of the conference, meaning the tie was broken by fewest goals conceded in MIAC play (Gustavus – 6, St. Olaf – 9).

First year Kymani Chitulangoma and sophomore Abdirasak Bulale scored two goals apiece to lead St. Olaf offensively, while junior Caspar Olseth picked up a goal and an assist and fifth-year senior Clemente Arcuch Puig registered two assists. Senior Shea Bechtel scored the Oles' other goal to become the 23rd student-athlete in NCAA Division III history to compile 40 goals and 40 assists in his career.

St. Olaf scored twice in the span of less than four minutes in the opening 20 minutes to build a comfortable lead. Bechtel opened the scoring with a flicked header off a corner from Arcuch Puig in the 16th minute. Olseth added to the lead less that four minutes later by powering home a header in front off a cross from sophomore Ryan Bechtel.

Bulale and Chitulangoma got their first goals of the game later in the half to push St. Olaf's lead to 4-0 at the break. In the 28th minute, Bulale curled a right-footed shot inside the far post from the left side of the box following a corner by Arcuch Puig. With just over four minutes remaining in the half, Chitulangoma tallied his first collegiate goal by slotting the ball into the lower-left corner from near the penalty spot after being picked out by sophomore Ben Brody.

Bulale and Chitulangoma both found the back of the net again in the second half to complete the six-goal win. Olseth set up Bulale's second goal in the 54th minute before first year Willy Vargas Jr. grabbed his first collegiate point with an assist on Chitulangoma's 81st-minute goal.

St. Olaf outshot Concordia by a 37-1 margin overall and had all 19 of the game's shots on goal. The Oles also earned 15 corner kicks compared to four for the Cobbers. Jensen Waltz made 13 saves in the loss for the visitors, while three goalkeepers teamed up for the shutout for the Oles.

As the No. 2 seed, St. Olaf will await the results of Monday's quarterfinals to find out who it will host in the semifinals on Thursday, Nov. 7 at 2 p.m.
