NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College volleyball team secured its seventh consecutive berth in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Playoffs with a 25-15, 25-20, 25-16 sweep of the College of St. Scholastica on Senior Night on Saturday evening at Skoglund Center.
St. Olaf (19-8, 6-4 MIAC) began the night knowing a win would secure a postseason spot and took care of business with the sweep of St. Scholastica (12-16, 2-8 MIAC). The Oles, who hit .383 for their second-highest attack percentage of the season in the victory, are two matches ahead of Macalester College in the sixth and final playoff spot with one regular-season match remaining after the Scots were swept by Augsburg University on Saturday.
Prior to the match, St. Olaf honored its four members of the Class of 2025 – seniors
Maycie Rogers and
Kathryn Deist, as well as student coaches
Devon Cole and
Cordelia Smith – and their families on the court. The senior class has helped the Oles to MIAC Playoff appearances in all four of their seasons, in addition to an NCAA Tournament appearance last season.
Sophomore
Lilah Van Scoyoc was the lone hitter to reach double figures in kills for either team in the match with 10, while first years
Carlie Beckstrand and
Mehsa Krause registered eight kills apiece with attack percentage of at least .400. Sophomore
Maren Miller added seven kills as well.
Sophomore
Paige Christophersen and
Skylar Fildew orchestrated the balanced and efficient offensive attack with 37 combined assists. Junior
Morgan Ryan tallied a match-high 16 digs to help the Oles hold the Saints to a .098 attack percentage in the match.
In the opening set, St. Olaf led just 9-8 before going on a 7-1 run to establish a 16-9 advantage, with Miller providing three kills in the run. After trailing by nine, St. Scholastica cut its deficit to six before the Oles rattled off the final four points of the set to close it out. St. Olaf hit a match-best .467 in the opening set.
The Saints jumped out to four three-point leads in the second and led 14-12 before the Oles engineered a 7-1 run to take the lead at 19-15. St. Scholastica reduced its deficit to two twice before a 4-0 run by the Oles brought up a string of set points at 24-18.
Back-to-back kills by junior
Holly Jelinek resulted in a 10-4 lead for St. Olaf early in the third, but St. Scholastica responded with a 4-0 run to close the gap to two. The Oles quickly pushed their lead back to seven at 18-11 and led by at least six the rest of the way. St. Olaf hit .406 and held the visitors to a .054 clip in the third.
St. Olaf will close out the regular season with a trip to the College of Saint Benedict on Saturday, Nov. 9 for a 5 p.m. start against the Bennies.
