NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Sophomore
Tyler Green had a four-point night to lead the St. Olaf College men's hockey team to a 5-1 victory over Saint John's University and a series split on Saturday at St. Olaf Ice Arena.
Green had a goal and three assists for St. Olaf (3-4-1, 2-2-0 MIAC), which avenged a 5-1 loss the night before to Saint John's (5-2-0, 3-1-0 MIAC). The Johnnies, who received votes in this week's USCHO.com national poll, saw their five-game winning streak come to an end with the loss.
Green opened the scoring in the first period for the Oles before assisting on St. Olaf's next three goals, as the Oles scored the game's final three goals after the Johnnies got within one early in the second period. Seniors
Connor Kalthoff and
Matthew Pointer recorded two assists apiece for St. Olaf, which had five different goalscorers in the win.
The Oles led 1-0 at the first intermission after Green tallied the lone goal of the opening period at the 7:38 mark. Pointer set up the goal with a no-look backhand pass to Green in front after junior
Kelijah McElroy got the puck to Pointer behind the Saint John's net.
Kennelly doubled St. Olaf's lead with the first of the Oles' two power-play goals in the game just 1:12 into the second period. Green was again the creator of the goal by sliding a backhand pass through traffic to Kennelly, who swatted the puck home from just outside the crease for his second goal in four games this season.
Saint John's responded less than a minute later on a goal by Garrett Smith to quickly get back within a goal. Six minutes after Smith's goal, senior
Jonathan Young scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season off assists from Green and Kalthoff for St. Olaf's second power-play tally of the evening.
The Oles took the 3-1 lead into the second intermission before extending their lead to 4-1 less than seven minutes into the third on the first collegiate goal by first year
Nicholas Sewecke. A Saint John's turnover created a 3-on-1 rush inside the offensive zone, as Pointer slid the puck to Sewecke to slot into the net. Junior
Gunnar Johnson scored an unassisted, empty-net goal from near center ice with less than three minutes to go to close out the scoring.
Both teams generated 23 shots on goal in the game, but St. Olaf was 2-for-3 on the power play, compared to 0-for-3 for Saint John's. First year
Matthew Malin improved to 3-2-0 on the season with a 22-save evening for the Oles, while Bailey Huber finished with 18 saves for the Johnnies.
St. Olaf will return to action with a non-conference outdoor game against Bethel University on Saturday, Nov. 30 at 5 p.m. at the Recreation Outdoor Center in St. Louis Park.
