McConnell scores twice, Oles fall in shootout at Saint Ben's

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – First year Nora McConnell scored twice for the St. Olaf College women's hockey team in a 2-2 tie against the College of Saint Benedict before the Bennies claimed the extra point in a shootout on Saturday evening at Ritsche Arena.

Saint Benedict (3-2-2, 3-0-1 MIAC) twice held one-goal leads, but McConnell tied the game twice for St. Olaf (2-5-1, 0-3-1 MIAC), with the first year's second goal coming in the final 15 seconds of regulation. Neither team was able to break the tie in the 3-on-3 overtime before Ella Tuccitto scored the lone goal in the seventh round of the shootout to give the Bennies the extra point for the second night in a row.

A night after claiming a 2-1 overtime win, Saint Ben's got on the board first on a goal by Camryn Hargreaves at 8:10 of the opening period and maintained that lead until McConnell netted her first goal of the game at 11:58 of the second. The first year corralled a loose puck in the neutral zone before unleashing a shot over the blocker from the top of the left circle.

Peyton LeMieur broke the 1-1 tie and gave the Bennies a 2-1 lead at the second intermission at 17:57 of the second period. Saint Ben's preserved that lead until McConnell fired home a one-timer from between the circles with 15.6 seconds to go in the third for an extra-attacker goal.

Senior Devon Cole made three of her 21 saves in the game in overtime, but Kate Moffat stopped both of the Oles' shots on goal as the game went to a shootout. Saint Ben's committed a tripping penalty with less than 30 seconds to go in the overtime to prevent a breakaway. Neither team was able to score through 13 shooters in the shootout before Tuccitto scored off the underside of the crossbar to end it.

St. Olaf will host top-ranked UW-River Falls on Tuesday, Nov. 26 at 7 p.m. at St. Olaf Ice Arena.
