STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The St. Olaf College women's hockey team made it back-to-back shutout victories on opening weekend with a 3-0 win over UW-Stevens Point on Sunday afternoon at K.B. Willett Arena.
After a 4-0 win on Saturday night, St. Olaf (2-0-0) completed its second consecutive sweep of UW-Stevens Point (0-2-0) to start the season by getting a first-period goal from first year
Bella LaMere and third-period goals from senior
Sophie McBane and first year
Nora McConnell. First year
Baylyn Shankman stopped all 23 shots she faced to record the shutout in her first collegiate appearance.
LaMere got the Oles on the board first at the 12:32 mark of the opening period with the lone goal of the first 40 minutes. Senior
Rachel Wieland set up LaMere's first-career goal by gaining control of the puck in the right corner, skating towards the net, and getting the puck to LaMere to fire home. St. Olaf killed off two minor penalties in the first period to carry the 1-0 lead into the intermission.
UW-Stevens Point nearly tied the game just over a minute into the second period when Courtney Leising rang a shot off the upper-left corner of the pipe from the right circle. Leising's chance was one of few clear-cut scoring chances in the period for either team, as the Oles maintained their 1-0 lead after two.
Both teams created opportunities in the space of less than two minutes before the midway point of the third period. Junior
Solvei Berg-Messerole saw her shot from in tight in a 2-on-1 saved by Emily Griege before Maddie Andrle re-directed a shot off the post for the Pointers shortly thereafter.
St. Olaf gave itself some breathing room with two goals in the span of less than four minutes later in the period. McBane tallied her third goal of the weekend off a centering pass from junior
Molly Terebayza at the 12:13 mark before McConnell made it two points in as many collegiate games with a long-range shot through traffic at 16:08.
Shankman was equal to the task on each of the 23 shots UW-Stevens Point got on goal, including three late on after the Pointers created an extended 6-on-4 power play by pulling Griege for the extra attacker. Griege totaled 26 saves in the loss.
St. Olaf will play a home-and-home series with UW-Eau Claire next weekend, starting with a 6 p.m. Senior Night puck drop at St. Olaf Ice Arena on Friday, Nov. 8. The Blugolds were ranked No. 9 in the USCHO.com Division III Women's Preseason Poll.
