Karasek and Kalthoff score for men's hockey in tie at UW-Superior

SUPERIOR, Wis. – Senior Connor Kalthoff scored a power-play goal late in the third period to help the St. Olaf College men's hockey team to a 2-2 tie against UW-Superior on Saturday evening at Wessman Arena.

After junior Pavel Karasek gave St. Olaf (1-2-1) a 1-0 lead at the first intermission, UW-Superior (1-0-1) scored twice in the span of less than four minutes midway through the second period to give the hosts the lead. Kalthoff netted a power-play goal at 16:28 of the third and neither team was able to score in the 3-on-3 overtime before the Yellowjackets won the shootout, 2-1, in four rounds.

Karasek gave the Oles the lead with the lone goal of the opening period at the 12:45 mark by chipping home the rebound after his initial backhand shot was blocked by a UW-Superior skater. The goal was the junior's second in as many nights and the third of Karasek's career.

UW-Superior got goals on one-timers by Evan Axell and Gavin Watt 3:18 apart midway through the second period to take a 2-1 lead, with Watt's go-ahead goal coming on the power play. In the first half of the third period, first Panayioti Efraimidis and sophomore Camden Benson both hit the pipe for St. Olaf, which did so three times on the night.

Still down by one, the Oles had two power plays in the third period and cashed in just 21 seconds into the second opportunity when Kalthoff's shot was deflected by a Yellowjacket but fluttered in over the glove of Kobe Grant. Senior Ben Luscko and sophomore Tyler Green earned assists on Kalthoff's equalizer.

In the 3-on-3 overtime, senior Thomas Lalonde made a save to deny Dusty Bergstrom in a 2-on-1 just 45 seconds in and Ikki Kogawa ran the iron stick-side of Lalonde in a rush later in the session. Lalonde had six of his 24 saves in the extra session, including three in a flurry in the final minute.

With the game officially going in the books as a tie after the overtime and the shootout being meaningless, junior Jonathan Panisa gave the Oles a 1-0 lead in the second round by scoring on the backhand, but Gavin Rasmussen scored a must-make attempt for the Yellowjackets in the third round to keep the hosts alive. Green hit the post with his fourth-round attempt before Watt won the shootout for UW-Superior.

St. Olaf will open Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play by hosting Gustavus Adolphus College on Friday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. at St. Olaf Ice Arena.
