St. Kate's stymies women's hockey in series finale

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's hockey team saw its three-game Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) winning streak come to an end with a 3-0 loss to St. Catherine University on Saturday afternoon at Drake Arena.

Coming off a 3-0 home win the night before, St. Olaf (9-12-0, 3-11-0 MIAC) was unable to muster a goal despite having seven power plays in the game. St. Kate's (6-14-1, 2-11-1 MIAC) got an early goal from Gabby Bodin and added two goals in the final five minutes, including an empty-netter, to pick up just its second home win of the season.

The Wildcats' only prior home victory this season was a 4-1 win over Northland College in their season opener on Oct. 27. The game marked just the second time the Oles have been shut out this season, along with a 6-0 loss to then-third-ranked UW-River Falls on Nov. 21.

St. Olaf was able to generate just six shots on goal on its seven power plays totaling 12:21 in the game, including over 90 seconds of 5-on-3 time in three different situations in the game. Anna Friendshuh stopped all 24 shots the Oles got on net to record her first shutout of the season, which was the Wildcats' second of the year.

St. Kate's was assessed two minor penalties in the first 2:19 of the game, creating :34 of 5-on-3 time, but St. Olaf was only able to muster two shots on goal during the two penalties. Later in the period, the Wildcats got the lone goal of the first two periods from Gabby Bodin at the 6:26 mark. After Bodin carried the puck up the right side and drove to the net, she lost control of the puck, but the puck ricocheted in off a St. Olaf skater to give St. Kate's the only goal it would need.

The hosts outshot St. Olaf by a 25-13 margin over the first two periods and carried the 1-0 lead into the third after killing off three penalties in the first period and another in the second. In the third, the Oles had one minute of combined 5-on-3 time spread across two opportunities after the Wildcats committed three minor penalties in the span of less than three minutes but could not capitalize.

St. Olaf got the puck in the net with just over seven minutes remaining in the third period, but the an Ole had knocked the net off prior to the puck entering the net. Sarah Wangen gave St. Kate's some breathing room with just under five minutes remaining by scoring off a stretch pass from Raechel Painovich before Lauren Henriksen added an empty-net goal with 1:30 to go.

After posting her fourth shutout of the season on Friday night, sophomore Hannah Fritz made a season-high 32 saves for the Oles in the loss. St. Kate's outshot St. Olaf by a 35-24 count in a game where the Oles went 42-of-59 (71.2 percent) at the faceoff dots.

With two series remaining, St. Olaf returns to the ice against the College of Saint Benedict on Friday, Feb. 9 at 7 p.m. at Ritsche Arena in St. Cloud.
