Morgan to continue career at Loyola Marymount next fall

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Following a decorated career for the St. Olaf College men's soccer team, Hakeem Morgan will continue his career at NCAA Division I Loyola Marymount University next fall.

A two-time All-American and two-time All-Region honoree at St. Olaf, Morgan will use his final season of eligibility at Loyola Marymount, which is located in Los Angeles, Calif. The Lions, who are members of the West Coast Conference (WCC), are coming off a run to the national quarterfinals last season, marking the program's deepest-ever run in the NCAA Tournament. Morgan will graduate from St. Olaf this May with a degree in economics and will enter the foundations of business management certificate program at LMU in the fall.

"I'm really excited to make this jump," Morgan said. "I don't think I would be in this position if it wasn't for all the help I have received and the challenges I have faced here at St. Olaf. Firstly, I would like to thank (former St. Olaf Head Men's Soccer Coach) Travis Wall, (current St. Olaf Head Men's Soccer Coach) Justin Oliver, and (St. Olaf Co-Director of Sports Medicine/Associate Athletic Trainer) Tyler Keith because they were always there for me with anything on and off the field. Secondly, to my teammates, the level of soccer players and the soccer environment we have at St. Olaf is not only the best in Division III, but, for a lot of our guys, it has translated when moving on to play in other divisions during USL2 seasons in the summers. If it wasn't for them, I would not have this opportunity to move on to the highest level of Division I soccer at somewhere like LMU, with high aspirations of doing well individually and having an impact on the team this fall."

Despite playing the equivalent of three full seasons at St. Olaf, Morgan put together one of the most prolific careers in program history, as the Costa Rican ranks in the top five in program history in goals (t-5th, 31), assists (t-4th, 23), points (t-5th, 85), shots (2nd, 235), shots on goal (2nd, 114), and game-winning goals (t-2nd, 11). Morgan compiled those stats in 60 games after his rookie season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Hakeem has been one of the best forwards in the country since his arrival to St. Olaf," said Oliver. "We are so incredibly excited to see him take his next steps in his soccer journey to LMU where I have no doubt he will have an immediate impact for their program."

Morgan burst onto the scene in 2021, earning Second Team All-America honors from the United Soccer Coaches and D3soccer.com after tallying 39 points on 15 goals and nine assists in 22 games. He was also a United Soccer Coaches First Team All-Region IX and All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) honoree that season.

This past fall, Morgan collected United Soccer Coaches First Team All-Region IX and All-MIAC honors for the second time in his career after a senior campaign that saw him record 24 points on 10 goals and four assists in 22 games. He was instrumental in leading the Oles to their first NCAA Division III national title, scoring the game-winning goal in the 88th minute in a 2-1 victory at the University of Chicago in the sectional final and the game-tying goal in the 62nd minute of a 2-1 overtime win over Amherst College in the national championship game.

Morgan's play helped St. Olaf to a 54-11-6 overall record, including a mark of 25-2-3 in MIAC play, over the last three seasons. He was part of two MIAC regular-season championship teams, two MIAC Playoff championship teams, and back-to-back "Sweet 16" appearances in addition to the 2023 national title.

This past October, Morgan was called up to the Costa Rica U-23 National Team for a pair of international friendlies against Colombia in his home country. He was one of just two NCAA student-athletes on the 23-player roster and entered both games as a substitute.
