Men's tennis sweeps doubles in split in Waverly

WAVERLY, Iowa – Sophomore Bogdan Vizoli went 4-0 on the day atop the lineup for the St. Olaf College men's tennis team, which split matches against Wartburg College and Northwestern College on Saturday at Meirink Family Tennis Facility.

St. Olaf (2-5) started the day with a doubles sweep and wins at the top-four singles spots in a 7-2 victory over host Wartburg (3-10). Later in the day, the Oles again swept the three doubles matches and got a win from Vizoli at No. 1 singles, but Northwestern (5-4) won the other five singles matches in super tiebreakers to claim a 5-4 victory.

St. Olaf is slated to return to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play by hosting Macalester College in its home opener on Saturday, March 23 at 2 p.m.

St. Olaf 7, Wartburg 2 | Box Score

In the first match of the day, Vizoli, first year Marjan Veldic, and senior Jakub Belik all won both of their matches to lead St. Olaf past Wartburg. First year Cathal Mee added a super-tiebreaker victory at No. 4 singles for the Oles.

In doubles, Vizoli and Veldic picked up their team-leading fifth win of the season with an 8-4 victory at No. 1 doubles to put the first point on the board. The senior tandems of Belik and Max Loesch and Ben Anderson and Karsten Johnson followed with identical 8-6 victories at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, respectively, to close out the sweep.

The Oles secured the win in singles by winning the first four matches to conclude. Vizoli, Veldic, and Belik all logged straight-set victories and Mee added a 6-2, 4-6, 10-8 triumph at No. 4 singles for his third super-tiebreaker win of the season.

Northwestern 5, St. Olaf 4 | Box Score

St. Olaf completed a 6-0 day in doubles by claiming three tight matches to carry a 3-0 lead into doubles but could not find a way to win any of the five super tiebreakers, as Northwestern rallied for the victory.

The first-time tandems of Vizoli/Loesch and Belik/Veldic started St. Olaf on its way to a doubles sweep with 8-5 and 8-6 victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. Anderson and Johnson finished off the sweep by winning all seven points of their tiebreaker at No. 3 doubles to post their second win of the day.

In singles, Vizoli stretched his winning streak to four matches with a 7-5, 6-1 victory in the No. 1 singles spot, but that proved to be the only singles win of the match for the Oles. The Red Raiders came back from a set down at No. 2 and No. 3 singles for two of their five super-tiebreaker victories. Mee was involved in a marathon match at No. 4 singles before eventually falling 7-5, 6-7 (5-7), 15-13 to Leandro Costa.
