ORLANDO, Fla. – The St. Olaf College women's tennis team saw its season-opening seven-match winning streak come to an end with a 6-3 loss to Union College (N.Y.) on Tuesday at the USTA National Campus.
Sophomore
Olha Zubarieva had a hand in two of the three points for St. Olaf (7-1), but Union (6-3) used a 2-1 start in doubles and four doubles victories to snap the Oles' streak. St. Olaf's 7-0 start to the season was its best since going 8-0 to start the 2014-15 campaign and its seven-match winning streak was its longest since a seven-match streak from Feb. 13 – April 9, 2016.
Zubarieva and junior
Sarah Clark registered St. Olaf's lone point in doubles with an 8-3 triumph at No. 1 doubles. The Garnett Chargers won a super tiebreaker at No. 2 doubles and claimed an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles to take a 2-1 edge into singles.
In singles, Zubarieva upped her record to 10-1 this season with a 6-4, 7-5 victory at No. 1 singles, while junior
Fiona O'Flaherty remained unbeaten (7-0) in singles with a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles. Three of Union's four singles wins came in straight sets, with the other coming by a 12-10 margin in a super tiebreaker at No. 3 singles.
St. Olaf plays twice on Wednesday, March 27, facing SUNY New Paltz at 11 a.m. CDT and Warner University at 3 p.m. CDT. at the USTA National Campus.
