ORLANDO, Fla. – The St. Olaf College men's tennis team was defeated 7-0 by National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) member Warner University on Wednesday at the USTA National Campus.
Senior
Karsten Johnson and first year
Ryan Birnesser recorded a victory at No. 3 doubles for St. Olaf (2-8) in the loss to Warner (9-5), which was played under the NAIA scoring format. Under the NAIA rules, doubles matches are one traditional set and one point is awarded to the team that wins the majority of the three doubles matches.
In their first match as a pairing, Birnesser and Johnson logged a 6-3 win at No. 3 doubles to give Birnesser his first victory as part of the team's lineup. All three of Birnesser's service games went to deuce, but he was able to hold each time to help secure the win.
The Royals did not drop a game in the other two doubles matches and swept the six singles matches. Senior
Ben Anderson won the first set of his match at No. 5 singles before falling 10-7 in a super tiebreaker.
