Carthage powers past baseball in Oles' Arizona finale

TUCSON, Ariz. – The St. Olaf College baseball team closed out its trip to Arizona with a 16-5 loss to Carthage College on Monday at Kino Sports Complex.

Carthage (2-2) hit two-run home runs in each of the first two innings to jump out to an early lead and added a third home run in the fifth. Senior Sam Lavin, sophomore Brendan Goldman, and sophomore Christopher Woodside had two hits and an RBI apiece in the loss for St. Olaf (2-2).

Two-run shots from P.J. Moser and Zander Tubbs in the first two frames gave the Firebirds a 4-0 lead early on. Carthage stretched its lead to 7-0 before the Oles got on the board in the third. Woodside drove in the first run of the game for St. Olaf with a one-out double and sophomore Henry Black followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 7-2.

Tubbs delivered his second home run of the game – a three-run shot – in Carthage's seven-run fifth inning that ballooned the Firebirds' lead to 14-2. Tubbs capped a six-RBI day with a RBI single in the seventh as well.

Trailing 16-2, St. Olaf plated three runs in the bottom of the seventh before the game ended due to the run rule. First year Cole Pleimann had a pinch-hit RBI double in the inning and Goldman added a run-scoring single later in the frame.

Ryan Scanlon picked up the win for Carthage by striking out seven over 6.1 innings of work, allowing five runs on six hits with four walks. Five pitchers worked in the game for St. Olaf, but first year Kieran Haaland was the only one not to allow a run in his 0.2 innings of relief.

The Oles' back-to-back doubleheaders against Luther College on Saturday and Sunday, March 9-10 have been moved to Luther's campus in Decorah, Iowa. First pitch is slated for noon on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday.
