Anderson clinches 5-4 win for men's tennis over Saint John's

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – The St. Olaf College men's tennis team picked up its first victory over Saint John's University since 2015 with a 5-4 win over the Johnnies on Saturday afternoon at Chang Tennis Complex.

St. Olaf (3-9, 2-3 MIAC) snapped its seven-match losing streak in the series with Saint John's (2-8, 2-3 MIAC) and its five-match skid this season with the 5-4 victory. Sophomore Bogdan Vizoli and senior Ben Anderson won super tiebreakers in the final two matches on court to give the Oles the win.

After St. Olaf took a 2-1 lead in doubles, Saint John's won three of the first four singles matches to finish to get within one point of the five necessary to lock up the win with two matches still on court. Vizoli evened the match at 4-4 by outlasting Ryan Will at No. 1 singles by a 5-7, 7-6 (8-6), 1-0 (10-4) margin at No. 1 singles before Anderson clinched the match at No. 6 singles. After dropping a first-set tiebreaker, Anderson rallied for a 6-7 (2-7), 6-3, 1-0 (12-10) victory in the deciding match.

Saint John's put the first point on the board in doubles with an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles, Vizoli and first year Marjan Veldic evened it up at 1-1 with an 8-6 win at the No. 1 spot. Seniors Jakub Belik and Max Loesch followed with an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles to give St. Olaf the advantage heading into singles and remain undefeated at 4-0 this season.

After Saint John's claimed a straight-set win at No. 2 singles, Loesch moved to 2-0 in conference play with a 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-7) victory at No. 3 singles to start a run of five consecutive singles matches to go to a super tiebreaker. The Johnnies won super tiebreakers at No. 3 and No. 4 singles to claim a 4-3 lead with the No. 1 and No. 6 singles matches still in progress.

Vizoli and Anderson both lost the first sets of their respective matches but both rallied over the final two sets to lock up the win for St. Olaf. Vizoli stayed alive by winning a second-set tiebreaker before going on to win the super tiebreaker by a 10-4 margin for his team-leading ninth singles victory of the season. Anderson recovered from losing a first-set tiebreaker in his match to provide the clinching point with a 12-10 super-tiebreaker win.

The Oles visit Carleton College on Monday, April 15 for a 4:30 p.m. start at Pat Lamb Tennis Courts.
