Men's tennis continues dominance of Saint Mary's with 7-2 win

OWATONNA, Minn. – The St. Olaf College men's tennis team recorded its second Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) victory in its last three matches with a 7-2 win over Saint Mary's University on Saturday afternoon at West Hills Tennis and Fitness Center.

St. Olaf (4-10, 3-4 MIAC) continued its dominance of the series with Saint Mary's (5-14, 0-9 MIAC) by improving to 46-4 against the Cardinals with the 7-2 win. The Oles have won the last six meetings in the series and nine of the last 10 going back to 2014.

In the victory, St. Olaf swept the three doubles matches and claimed four straight-set singles wins, while Saint Mary's won both of the singles matches to go to a super tiebreaker. The Oles dropped just 11 games in the three doubles matches and 11 games in the four straight-set singles wins.

The tandems of sophomore Bogdan Vizoli/first year Marjan Veldic, seniors Jakub Belik/Max Loesch, and first years Cathal Mee/Ryan Birnesser gave St. Olaf a 3-0 cushion heading into singles. Vizvoli and Veldic improved to 4-3 in MIAC play at the No. 1 spot with an 8-4 victory, Belik and Loesch moved to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the MIAC with an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles, and Mee and Birnesser logged an 8-2 victory at No. 3 doubles in their second match as partners.

Vizoli, Veldic, Belik, and senior Ben Anderson were victorious in singles for the Oles, which registered wins at the top-three spots and the sixth spot. Vizoli earned his team-leading 10th singles win of the season with a 6-1, 6-0 victory atop the lineup, while Veldic and Belik posted identical 6-2, 6-2 triumphs at No. 2 and No. 3 singles.

Anderson added a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles. Mee and Loesch both rebounded from dropping the first sets of their matches at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively, but eventually were edged by two points in their super tiebreakers.

Next up for St. Olaf is a home match against Bethel University on Friday, April 26 at 4:30 p.m. at Carlson Courts.
