Haucks inducted in inaugural CSCAA Division III Hall of Fame class

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – St. Olaf College head swimming and diving coach Bob Hauck '87 and his father – the late legendary Dave Hauck – were among the inaugural class of inductees enshrined in the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Division III Swimming and Diving Hall of Fame on Monday evening.

The Haucks were part of a distinguished list of 38 former swimmers, divers, and retired coaches selected to be part of the first class of inductees into the CSCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Hall of Fame. The class of 16 coaches, 11 men's swimmers and divers, and 11 women's swimmers and divers were honored at the annual CSCAA Convention banquet at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Indianapolis.

The late Dave Hauck led the St. Olaf men's program for 44 years and the women's program for 27 years, while also serving in many other roles on campus, after first coming to St. Olaf in 1966. His teams won 43 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) championships (28 men, 15 women) and combined for 21 top-10 national finishes (16 men, five women). Under Hauck's watch, St. Olaf produced 21 NCAA Division III individual national champions and one national championship relay.

He was named the CSCAA Division III Coach of the Year three times, including sharing the title on the men's side with Bob in 2009, and was an eight-time MIAC Coach of the Year across the two genders. In 1992, Hauck was inducted into the Minnesota Swimming Hall of Fame, and he later received the CSCAA's Richard E. Steadman Award, which is given to the swimming and diving coach who has done the most to spread happiness in the sport, in 2000. He was inducted into the St. Olaf Athletic Hall of Fame in 2006 before passing away in July 2019 and was honored among the CSCAA's 100 Greatest College Swimming and Diving Coaches of the past 100 years in 2021. The St. Olaf Athletic Department annually awards the Dave Hauck Award to its top senior male and female student-athlete in recognition of distinguished service and leadership, academic achievement, and athletic excellence.

Bob Hauck is the most decorated swimmer in the history of St. Olaf swimming and diving, as he earned 23 All-America accolades and won seven national titles from 1984-87. During his career, he also set national records in the 100-yard backstroke, 200-yard backstroke, and 400-yard individual medley and was named the NCAA Division III Swimmer of the Year in 1987, making him one of the rare persons to win both the national coach and swimmer of the year awards. Hauck was named one of the CSCAA's 100 Greatest Men's Swimmers and Divers from the past 100 years in 2021.

After graduating from St. Olaf, Hauck qualified for the 1988 U.S. Olympic Trials and became one of the premier backstrokers in the country. In 1988, he was ranked in the top 25 in the world in the 200-yard backstroke. Hauck was a multiple-time senior national finalist and U.S. Open finalist and swam for the United States Post-Graduate National Team in 1987-88. He also competed internationally for Athletes in Action in the summer of 1989. Hauck was inducted into the St. Olaf Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998 and the Minnesota Swimming Coaches Hall of Fame in 2014.

Founded in 1922, the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA), is the nation's first organization of college coaches. The mission of the CSCAA is to advance the sport of swimming and diving with coaches at the epicenter of leadership, advocacy, and professional development.
