Women's soccer recovers from early deficit with 2-1 win over Blugolds

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – The St. Olaf College women's soccer team scored twice in the final 30 minutes to claim a 2-1 come-from-behind non-conference road victory over UW-Eau Claire on Sunday afternoon at Simpson Field.

After UW-Eau Claire (1-1-0) opened the scoring in the first minute of the game, St. Olaf (2-0-0) got a goal from junior Megan Timmerman in the 62nd minute to tie the game and benefited from an own goal from the Blugolds in the 78th minute to come away with the victory. The win snapped UW-Eau Claire's five-game unbeaten streak (4-0-1) in the series between the two programs and was the Oles' second victory in the last 13 meetings dating back to 2010.

Saturday's victory gave St. Olaf back-to-back wins to start the season for the first time since 2017. Each of the Oles' last 10 victories - dating back to a 1-0 win at Augsburg University on Oct. 25, 2022 - have come by one-goal margins.

The hosts wasted little time in scoring the game's opening goal when Kori Millis slotted the ball into the lower-right corner off a loose ball in the box. Junior Cat Duffy-Shaw had the best scoring chance of the opening half for St. Olaf but fired the ball straight at the goalkeeper in the 18th minute after forcing a turnover in midfield and carrying the ball forward.

Less than five minutes into the second half, UW-Eau Claire was awarded a penalty kick after a handball in the box, but sophomore Clara Luger dove to her left to keep out Elise PInewski's attempt. In her second collegiate start, Luger recorded five saves for the second game in a row.

With the Blugolds still leading 1-0, Timmerman drew St. Olaf level in the 62nd minute with the third goal of her career. From the left edge of the box, Timmerman spun onto her right foot and curled a shot over the goalkeeper for the tying goal. A little more than 15 minutes later, the Oles took the lead when a pass back to the UW-Eau Claire goalkeeper found its way into the net for the deciding goal.

St. Olaf outshot UW-Eau Claire by a 5-2 margin in the second half and held an 8-6 edge in shots for the game, although both teams tallied six shots on goal.

The Oles continue a string of three consecutive road games with a trip to UW-Stevens Point for a 4 p.m. kickoff on Wednesday, Sept. 4.
