STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The St. Olaf College women's soccer team continued its unbeaten start to the season with a 0-0 tie at UW-Stevens Point on Wednesday afternoon at Point Soccer Bowl.
Despite a combined 39 shots and 17 shots on goal, St. Olaf (2-0-1) and UW-Stevens Point (0-2-1) played to the first scoreless tie in the nine meetings between the two programs. The draw extended the Oles' unbeaten streak in the series to four games (2-0-2) dating back to 2019 and gave St. Olaf its first undefeated three-game start to a season since 2011.
St. Olaf tallied a season-high 22 shots – one more than its total from its first two games combined – and nine shots on goal, while UW-Stevens Point registered 17 shots and eight efforts on target, but neither team was able to find the back of the net. Sophomore
Clara Luger recorded a career-high seven saves and logged her second shutout in three starts to begin her career for the Oles, while Erika Panella had nine stops for the Pointers.
Senior
Katie Sewell and sophomore
Emily Johnson were credited with a game-high four shots apiece for St. Olaf, which also got three shots apiece from junior
Marit Klagge and sophomore
Wren VanDeWalker. The Oles also controlled 57 percent of the possession in the game and had 10 corner kicks to UWSP's six.
St. Olaf took four shots in the opening five-plus minutes and came the closest to scoring when Panella tipped VanDeWalker's shot from outside the box over the bar in the fifth minute. Twenty minutes later, Klagge forced a close-range save from Panella with a back-heel attempt. Senior
Sadie Klassen tested Panella in the 37th minute with a curling left-footed effort, but Panella dove to her right to keep the shot out.
Early in the second half, UW-Stevens Point's Mara Gustafson steered the ball towards goal after a corner kick, but a St. Olaf defender was on hand to clear the ball away from danger. The Pointers had another opportunity to score five minutes later in the 55th minute, but Gabby Dunn fired the ball over the net from near the six-yard box following a free kick.
Johnson, junior
Katie Beaudry, and Klagge all recorded shots in the final seven-plus minutes for St. Olaf. In the 83rd minute, Beaudry got her head to a free kick into the box but could not generate enough power on a downward header to get the ball past Panella. Panella made her ninth and final stop of the afternoon in the 85th minute to keep out Klagge's shot from the top of the box near the lower-right corner.
St. Olaf continues a stretch of three road games in a row with a trip to Decorah, Iowa to face Luther College on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 3 p.m.
