Klassen's late strike gets women's soccer another one-goal win

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Senior Sadie Klassen struck late to lift the regionally-ranked St. Olaf College women's soccer team to a 1-0 non-conference victory over UW-Stout on Tuesday afternoon at Rolf Mellby Field.

In a game that saw St. Olaf (4-0-1) outshoot UW-Stout (0-2-2) by a 28-2 margin, the Oles had to wait until Klassen broke the deadlock in the 83rd minute with her second goal of the season. The victory continued St. Olaf's longest unbeaten start to a season since 2011 and was the team's fourth shutout in five games this season.

Three of the Oles' four wins this season have come by one-goal margins. St. Olaf was ranked No. 7 in Region IX in the initial United Soccer Coaches Regional Rankings released earlier in the day on Tuesday.

With the game still scoreless, Klassen collected a pass from junior Clara Kubis on the right, turned onto her left foot, and shot the ball into the lower-left corner of the goal from outside the box for what proved to be the lone goal of the game. The goal was the 13th of Klassen's career in her 25th collegiate game.

Sophomore Clara Luger only had one save to make in collecting her third shutout of the season for the Oles, who put 11 shots on goal themselves. Kristen Silenzi kept the Blue Devils, who had played to 0-0 ties in each of their last two games, level until Klassen's goal and finished with 10 saves in the loss for the visitors.

St. Olaf outshot UW-Stout by a 12-0 margin in the opening 45 minutes but could not find a breakthrough. Just over a minute into the second half, sophomore Emily Johnson nearly opened the scoring but found the side-netting with a shot from a sharp angle on the left of the box. A little over five minutes later, UW-Stout generated its lone shot on goal of the game, but Anna Odisho's effort from the middle of the box was straight at Luger.

Sophomore Wren VanDeWalker drew a diving save from Silenzi in the 54th minute with a left-footed effort across goal, but Silenzi tipped it out for a corner. St. Olaf hit the woodwork twice prior to Klassen's goal, with Johnson striking the crossbar from outside the box in the 56th minute and Klassen steering a header off the bar less than a minute before her goal.

The Oles will close out non-conference play by hosting the University of Northwestern in a 1 p.m. kickoff on Saturday, Sept. 14 at Rolf Mellby Field.
