Oles outlast Storm in another five-setter in tournament finale

WAVERLY, Iowa – The St. Olaf College volleyball team picked up its second victory this season over Simpson College by outlasting the Storm in a 21-25, 25-14, 25-13, 16-25, 15-8 win to close out the Wartburg Invitational on Saturday at the Wartburg-Waverly Sports & Wellness Center.

After sweeping Simpson (6-8) two weekends ago, St. Olaf (10-3) was pushed the distance by the storm but recovered from losing the fourth set to finish off the victory in its third five-set match of the weekend. St. Olaf had kills on 10 of its 15 points and hit .412 in the decider.

Sophomore Lilah Van Scoyoc tied for match-high honors with 18 kills to lead the Oles offensively and added 11 digs in her fifth double-double of the season. Van Scoyoc, who has tallied double-digit kills in seven consecutive matches, was named to the All-Tournament Team after compiling 46 kills and 38 digs over St. Olaf's three matches in Waverly.

Senior Maycie Rogers and first year Mehsa Krause were also in double figures in kills with 14 and 11, respectively, with Rogers hitting .393 in the match. Junior Paige Christophersen logged the second 20-20 double-double of her career with 28 assists and a career-high 22 digs, while junior Morgan Ryan racked up 27 digs for her fifth match in a row with at least 20.

Neither team hit above .150 in the opening set, but Simpson went on a 9-1 run to grab a 13-7 lead and held off St. Olaf late to take the opener. The Oles got their offense going in the second set, hitting .350 and getting six kills from Van Scoyoc to even the match at a set apiece with a 25-14 set win. Ryan helped the Oles limit the Storm to a .050 attack percentage in the set.

The third set was a similar story as St. Olaf outhit Simpson by a .316 to .091 margin to a convincing 25-13 set win. After the Storm cut a 9-4 deficit to one at 9-8, the Oles won the next seven points – three on kills by Rogers – to build an eight-point lead and led by at least seven the rest of the way.

Simpson reversed the trend in the fourth set by limiting St. Olaf to a .000 clip to force a decider. The Storm opened up an early 12-5 lead and sided out at a 70.6 percent clip in the set. In the fifth, four Oles had multiple kills and Simpson managed just four kills, as St. Olaf took a 9-4 lead and later won five of the final six points to complete a 2-1 weekend.

After four weekends of tournament play, the Oles will open Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play at Bethel University on Wednesday, Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. in Arden Hills.
