Oles sweep past Simpson and UW-River Falls to complete 3-0 weekend

RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The St. Olaf College volleyball team completed a 3-0 weekend at the Falcon Invite by sweeping Simpson College and UW-River Falls on Saturday at Don Page Arena.

After starting the tournament with a five-set win over the University of Minnesota Morris on Friday night, St. Olaf (4-2) eased to a 25-17, 25-18, 25-17 victory over Simpson (4-3) in its first match of the day before sweeping UW-River Falls (3-4) by scores of 25-14, 25-15, 25-20 in the final match of the night. Three of the Oles' four victories have been sweeps.

After the tournament, sophomore Maren Miller and junior Morgan Ryan were named to the nine-member Falcon Invite All-Tournament Team. Miller recorded 27 kills (2.45 per set), hit .490, and had a team-high 10 blocks (0.91 per set) over the three matches. Ryan compiled 61 digs (5.55 per set), 12 assists (1.09 per set), and a pair of aces.

St. Olaf will head to Dubuque, Iowa next weekend for four matches at the Loras Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 13-14. The Oles will face the University of Dubuque (3 p.m.) and St. Norbert College (5 p.m.) on Friday.

St. Olaf outhit Simpson by a .276-.105 margin behind a balanced attack with six Oles with at least six kills in the victory. The win was St. Olaf's third consecutive sweep in the series between the two programs and the Oles' eighth victory in the last nine meetings since 2006.

Senior Maycie Rogers tallied a match-high 11 kills and hit .409 for St. Olaf, while Miller, sophomore Lilah Van Scoyoc, and first year Mehsa Krause had nine kills apiece. First year Carlie Beckstrand added seven kills and junior Dori Hobbie chipped in with six.

Junior Paige Christophersen finished one dig shy of a double-double with 26 assists and nine digs, while sophomore Skylar Fildew picked up 20 assists, five digs, and a team-high three aces. Ryan led the match with 15 digs, while senior Kathryn Deist was in double figures in digs for the third match in a row with 13.

Rogers and Van Scoyoc combined for 10 of St. Olaf's 18 kills in the opening set with five apiece. Miller and Rogers accounted for kills on the first six points of the match to get the Oles out to a quick 6-0 lead. St. Olaf held onto the lead the rest of the way and won seven of the final 10 points to take the opener.

The Oles limited the Storm to a .030 attack percentage in the second set and overcame an early 4-0 deficit to take a two-set lead. St. Olaf used a 5-0 run to take an 11-8 lead it would not relinquish. Simpson hung around trailing by just three at 16-13 before the Oles won four points in a row to build up a seven-point cushion.

In the third, St. Olaf got five kills on seven swings from Miller and hit .318 to close out its first sweep of the day. The Oles never trailed in the set and broke it wide open early with an 11-2 run to open up a 16-6 advantage.

St. Olaf hit just .155 as a team in the final match of the weekend but held UW-River Falls to a -.017 clip with 11 blocks over the three-set win. Miller was in on seven blocks and had two of the Oles' eight aces in the victory.

Van Scoyoc and Krause collected nine kills apiece to pace St. Olaf offensively, while Christophersen logged her second double-double of the season with 18 assists and 11 digs. Ryan anchored the Oles' defense with a match-high 19 digs to reach double figures for the sixth time in six matches this season.

After losing to the Falcons in each of the last two seasons, St. Olaf eased to a 25-14 set win in the opening after UW-River Falls hit -.059 with seven kills and nine errors. UW-River Falls led 3-1 early on before the Oles won the next nine points – six on UWRF errors – to build a 10-3 lead and led by at least five the rest of the set.

Ryan made seven digs in the second set and St. Olaf committed just two errors in a wire-to-wire 25-15 set victory. Already leading 13-10, the Oles used a pair of 5-0 runs to open up a 23-12 lead before eventually closing it out on an ace by Fildew.

Neither team hit over .050 in the third set, as Ryan's eight digs helped St. Olaf again hold UW-River Falls to a sub-.000 attack clip. Trailing 9-5, St. Olaf won 11 of the next 12 points to go up by six and held off a late charge by the Falcons to wrap up the sweep.
