Men's hockey suffers second-straight one-goal loss to Hamline

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The St. Olaf College men's hockey team suffered its second consecutive one-goal loss to Hamline University in a 2-1 defeat to conclude the teams' Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) series on Saturday evening at TRIA Rink.

Junior Jonathan Panisa gave St. Olaf (6-6-1, 2-4-0 MIAC) an early lead inside the first five minutes, but Hamline (5-10-0, 4-4-0 MIAC) scored twice in the space of less than two minutes later in the second period to complete the sweep after a 4-3 win the night before. The sweep was Hamline's first of St. Olaf, which had won the last six meetings prior to this weekend, since 2016.

Panisa extended hits goal-scoring streak to three games by tipping in a pass from senior Jonathan Young in a 2-on-2 rush at the 4:20 mark of the opening period. The goal was Panisa's team-leading seventh of the season, breaking a tie with Young.

St. Olaf maintained the 1-0 lead until the hosts scored twice in the final four minutes of the second period. Derek Becklin tied the game with a slapshot from the left point at 16:06 before Tanner Rausch scored on a breakaway 1:33 later for what proved to be the game-winning goal.

The Oles outshot the Pipers for the second night in a row, holding a 27-22 advantage in shots on goal in the game. Maximillian Haselbacher stopped 26 of the 27 shots he faced for Hamline, which entered the game giving up an average of over 4.5 goals per game, while first year Matthew Malin had 20 saves for St. Olaf. Both teams had just one power play in the game, as four of the game's six penalties were coincidental minors.

St. Olaf will complete its non-conference slate with a pair of home games against Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) opposition next weekend, starting with a 7 p.m. encounter with UW-River Falls on Friday, Jan. 17.
