Men's basketball sees home winning streak versus Hamline snapped

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Hamline University used a balanced offensive attack to defeat the St. Olaf College men's basketball team, 63-57, in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) action on Wednesday evening at Skoglund Center.

Hamline (9-7, 5-2 MIAC) had four of its five starters in double figures in scoring and all five scored at least nine points, as the Pipers held St. Olaf (1-14, 0-6 MIAC) to 34.9 percent (22-for-63) shooting in the victory. The win snapped the Oles' six-game home winning streak in the series dating back to 2017.

Junior Kobe Kirk and first year AJ Uhl were the lone double-figure scorers for St. Olaf, with Kirk scoring 14 points and Uhl adding 10. Kirk's 14-point night moved him up one spot to 22nd on St. Olaf's all-time scoring list with 1,037 points. First year Luther Tostrud was 3-for-4 from three-point range on his nine-point night, while senior Dashiel Walker had six points and a season-high-tying eight rebounds.

Bradley Cimperman paced Hamline with 14 points, Raoul Vaidya had 13, Brendan Ebel added 11, and DanieL McCarrell had 10, while Austin Holt narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and 18 rebounds. The Pipers shot just 40.0 percent (20-for-50) but outscored the Oles by a 19-7 at the free-throw line on the night.

St. Olaf led for just over 10 minutes in the opening half and went into the break down just one at 27-26 despite shooting just 33.3 percent (10-for-30) in the half. The Oles opened the game on a 5-0 run on a layup by Walker and a three-pointer by Kirk. Later in the half, the Pipers went on a 6-0 run to take their largest lead of the half at 21-16 before Walker ended a scoring drought of over four minutes for St. Olaf with a jumper.

Uhl connected on a pair of three-pointers in the final three-plus minutes of the half to give the Oles a late lead, but the visitors scored the final four points of the half to claim the one-point advantage. Uhl had eight of his 10 points in the opening half for the Oles.

St. Olaf reclaimed the lead on its second possession of the second half when Walker fed sophomore Jachin Mertes for a transition layup, but Hamline got a layup from Holt on the next possession and did not trail the rest of the way. Kirk scored five quick points to bring the Oles even at 41-41 with 10:55 to go before the Pipers went on a 6-0 run to take the lead for good. Hamline led by as many as 11 in the final three minutes.

The Oles will travel to Minneapolis to face Augsburg University on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 1 p.m. at Si Melby Hall.
