McBane plays the hero in OT, women's hockey edges Cobbers

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Senior Sophie McBane scored the lone goal of the game at 2:57 of overtime to give the St. Olaf College women's hockey team a 1-0 win over Concordia-Moorhead in the teams' Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) series opener on Friday night at St. Olaf Ice Arena.

After nearly 63 minutes of scoreless hockey, McBane won a faceoff in the offensive zone, drove to the net, and lofted the puck over a sprawling Ashlea Arvidson to lift St. Olaf (7-8-1, 4-4-1 MIAC) past Concordia (3-13-0, 2-7-0 MIAC) for the extra point. The win was the Oles' third in a row in MIAC play and lifted St. Olaf above Bethel University and into sixth place in the standings with 13 points.

McBane's game-winning goal was her fifth goal of the season and her second game-winner. The senior's winner came two minutes after junior Solvei Berg-Messerole rang a shot from the right circle off the pipe inside the first minute of the 3-on-3 extra session. McBane was also 15-of-18 at the faceoff dot in the win.

Junior Hannah Fritz collected the 11th shutout of her career with a 24-save performance to improve to 4-2-0 on the year. Arvidson matched Fritz with 24 saves for the Cobbers. St. Olaf was 0-for-5 on the power play in the game, while Concordia was 0-for-3.

The Oles had two power plays in the opening period, including nearly 30 seconds of 5-on-3 time, but could not break through and could not capitalize on another power play early in the second. Fritz denied Jerica Friese in a 2-on-1 rush inside the final four minutes of the second period to keep the game scoreless.

Concordia had power plays in the first two minutes and final four minutes of the third but generated just one shot on goal in the two opportunities. St. Olaf tallied three shots on goal in their chance on the power play midway through the period but couldn't find a way past Arvidson until McBane's heroics.

The two teams will finish up their series on Saturday, Jan. 25 in a 2 p.m. start at St. Olaf Ice Arena.
