Cobbers' three-goal third dooms men's hockey in series finale

MOORHEAD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College men's hockey team dropped the finale of its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) series at Concordia-Moorhead after the Cobbers scored three times in the third period to break a 2-2 tie and claim a 5-2 win on Saturday afternoon at Moorhead Sports Center.

Concordia (8-9-2, 4-4-2 MIAC) led 2-0 early in the second period before St. Olaf (7-7-3, 2-5-1 MIAC) got the next two goals to tie the game at 2-2 after two. In the third, the Cobbers broke the tie just 1:20 in and scored twice in the final six-plus minutes, including an empty-netter with 1:20 left to come away with four of the weekend's six points.

Joe Harguindeguy tallied the first of Concordia's two power-play goals at 11:09 of the opening period to give the hosts the lead after one. The Cobbers pushed their lead to two just 30 seconds into the second on a goal by Caden Triggs, but the Oles responded 3:01 later when first year Nicholas Sewecke set up senior Connor Kalthoff for his fourth goal of the season on the power play at 3:31.

Sewecke tied the game with his fourth goal of the year with 36 seconds to go in the second, scoring off assists from first year Simon Pollock and junior Jonathan Panisa. The one-goal, one-assist performance gave Sewecke 10 points in 11 collegiate games.
Ben Luedtke broke the tie for Concordia just 1:20 into the period before Tucker Skime registered a power-play goal at 13:40 to make it a 4-2 game. Skime added an empty-netter in the final two minutes to seal the win for the Cobbers.

First year Matthew Malin made 33 saves – his third-highest total of the season – in the loss for the Oles, while Dane Couture had 22 saves for the hosts. Concordia outshot St. Olaf by a 38-24 margin in the game.

St. Olaf will visit Ed Saugestad Rink in Minneapolis for its series opener against Augsburg University on Friday, Jan. 31 at 7 p.m.
