WINONA, Minn. – Senior
Marit Klagge and junior
Emily Johnson scored early goals for the regionally-ranked St. Olaf College women's soccer team in a 2-0 road victory over Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) foe Saint Mary's University on Tuesday afternoon at a rain-soaked Ochrymowycz Field.
Klagge netted a fourth-minute penalty kick and Johnson tallied her MIAC-leading 13th goal of the season less than 10 minutes later to send St. Olaf (12-1-1, 6-0-1 MIAC) past Saint Mary's (8-4-2, 2-3-2 MIAC) with the Oles' seventh shutout victory in a row. The win saw St. Olaf keep pace with crosstown-rival Carleton College atop the MIAC standings with 19 points, as both of those programs are currently riding seven-game winning streaks.
St. Olaf's seven-game winning streak matches the longest in program history, first accomplished from Oct. 3-21, 1989, as the Oles have outscored their opponents by an 18-0 margin over that span. The shutout victory also extended the longest unbeaten streak in program history to 12 games (11-0-1) and the longest scoreless streak in program history to 714:11.
St. Olaf, which was ranked No. 5 in the most recent United Soccer Coaches Region IX Poll and came in at No. 16 in the NCAA Power Index (NPI), has outscored its opponents by a 34-3 margin since its lone loss of the season, a 3-0 defeat to then-No. 5-ranked Johns Hopkins University on Aug. 31. The Oles also moved to 6-0-0 on the road this season and picked up their first victory in Winona since 2017, while avenging a 2-0 loss at Ochrymowycz Field last season.
Klagge got St. Olaf out to an early lead by scoring on a penalty kick in the fourth minute after a Saint Mary's defender clipped the heels of junior
Roxanne Rundle to give the Oles their first penalty kick of the season. Klagge stepped up to score for the third game in a row – her seventh goal of the season – as the ball spun over the line after Anna Peckosh appeared to stop Klagge's attempt.
Less than 10 minutes later, Johnson turned in a cross from Rundle from the left for her 13th goal of the season, 11 of which have come in the last 10 games. Johnson's 13 goals are tied for the fifth-highest total in recorded program history, while her 28 points this season are the most by an Ole since 2018.
St. Olaf held Saint Mary's without a shot until the final 15 minutes, as the shot count ended 12-3 in favor of the Oles. The Cardinals limited the Oles to four shots on goal – St. Olaf's joint second-lowest total of the season – but could not generate offense of their own.
St. Olaf will embark on its second road trip of the week with a trip to Concordia-Moorhead on Saturday, Oct. 18 for a 3:30 p.m. start.
