Women's soccer locks up playoff spot with another shutout in Moorhead

MOORHEAD, Minn. – The regionally-ranked St. Olaf College women's soccer team clinched its second consecutive berth in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Playoffs by scoring four second-half goals in a 5-0 road win over Concordia-Moorhead on Saturday afternoon at Cobber Soccer Field.

After entering the day needing just one point to return to the MIAC Playoffs, St. Olaf (13-1-1, 7-0-1 MIAC) got a solitary first-half goal from senior Chloe Valleau before racking up four goals in the second half to dispatch Concordia (0-8-5, 0-6-2 MIAC) and keep pace atop the MIAC standings. The shutout was the eighth in a row for the Oles, who were ranked No. 5 in United Soccer Coaches Region IX Poll this week and were No. 16 nationally in the most recent NCAA Power Index (NPI).

In addition to earning St. Olaf its eighth appearance in the MIAC Playoffs, the victory extended the Oles' program-record unbeaten streak to 13 games (12-0-1) and its program-record shutout streak to 804:11. St. Olaf has outscored its opponents by a 23-0 over the run of eight consecutive shutout victories and is 7-0-0 on the road this season.

Valleau gave the Oles the only goal they would need by heading in a left-wing cross from junior Wren VanDeWalker in the 39th minute for her second goal of the season. Fifth-year senior Mia Van der Heide also earned an assist on the goal after slipping VanDeWalker into space near the left corner flag. The goal came after junior Emily Johnson and VanDeWalker both hit the woodwork in the space of two minute earlier in the half.

After outshooting the Cobbers by a 12-1 margin in the first half, the Oles took all 18 of the shots in the second half and were rewarded with four goals to help bolster the team's goal differential, which is one of the tiebreakers for playoff seeding. Senior Cat Duffy-Shaw started the four-goal half by scoring a 64th-minute penalty kick after a handball in the box.

Less than one minute later, senior Rachael Wilson tallied her first collegiate with a looping shot from the edge of the 18-yard box that flew in over the goalkeeper, with VanDeWalker and Johnson picking up the assists. Senior Megan Timmerman added her fourth goal of the season with a close-range header in the 76th minute before first year Anna Gilmer tallied her first collegiate goal in the final minutes.

St. Olaf got 17 of its 30 shots in the game on goal, as Julia Roark made 12 saves for the Cobbers in the loss. First year Charlotte Percy only faced one shot on goal over the first 77-plus minutes before giving way to junior Clara Luger, who finished off the combined shutout without needing to make a save.

After all three teams won their games on Saturday, St. Olaf remains tied with Carleton College atop the MIAC standings, one point ahead of third-place St. Catherine University, with three games to go. The Oles will host Hamline University on Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 3:30 p.m. at Rolf Mellby Field.
