NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The regionally-ranked St. Olaf College women's soccer team matched its single-season record for wins with a 4-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) victory over Hamline University on Wednesday afternoon at Rolf Mellby Field.
After establishing a program record with 14 wins last season, St. Olaf (14-1-1, 8-0-1 MIAC) matched that total this season by shutting out Hamline (3-7-7, 1-6-2 MIAC) for its program-record ninth consecutive victory, all via shutout. The Oles, who were ranked No. 4 in this week's United Soccer Coaches Region IX Poll and came in at No. 21 in the most recent update to the NCAA Power Index (NPI), have not lost in 14 games (13-0-1) – another program record – and stretched their longest-ever shutout streak to 894:11.
Junior
Emily Johnson scored twice to move into a tie for the MIAC lead with 15 goals this season, while sophomore
Avery Sames and fifth-year senior
Mia Van der Heide tallied their first goals as Oles in the victory. Van der Heide added an assist to her goal, while senior
Cat Duffy-Shaw increased her program-record assist total to 21 with a pair of assists.
Johnson's two-goal performance moved her up to sixth in program history in both career points (67) and goals (29). The junior's 15 goals are the most by an Ole since Hall of Famer Karen Schwartzbauer '87 had 20 in 1985 and her 33 points are fourth-most in recorded program history. As a team, St. Olaf broke a tie with the 1994 team to set a new record with 136 points this season, while moving up to second in goals (47) – just one shy of the 1994 team's record – while also breaking a tie with the 2001 team with a new record of 42 assists.
After Sames struck the woodwork just over six minutes in, St. Olaf scored twice in the span of 3:30 shortly thereafter to quickly build a 2-0 lead. Johnson opened the scoring in the 10th minute with a looping left-footed shot over the goalkeeper and inside the far post from the right side. Sames tallied her first collegiate goal in the 14th minute with a left-footed drive inside that flew inside the left post from the top of the box.
Van der Heide made it 3-0 before halftime by firing a left-footed shot inside the near post from the top of the box on the right. Johnson netted the lone goal of the second half by turning the ball in in front after Van der Heide centered the ball from the left wing off a pass from Duffy-Shaw.
St. Olaf took 20 of the game's 21 shots overall and all 11 of the afternoon's shots on goal. First year
Charlotte Percy equaled the single-season program wins record set by Kathy Ballard in 1999 with her 12th victory of the season despite not facing a shot over 79-plus minutes in net.
The win temporarily gave the Oles a one-point lead atop the MIAC standings ahead of Carleton College's 7:30 p.m. kickoff at Augsburg University. A Knights win would move the two crosstown rivals into a tie atop the standings, one point ahead of St. Catherine University.
St. Olaf will head to Minneapolis for a 7 p.m. kickoff against the Auggies on Saturday, Oct. 25.
