MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The regionally-ranked St. Olaf College women's soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to 15 games with a 1-1 tie on the road against Augsburg University in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play on Saturday night at Edor Nelson Field.
After a sixth-minute goal by Jayla Ponce, Augsburg (8-7-1, 5-4-1 MIAC) maintained its 1-0 lead until first year
Ashley Payne scored her first collegiate goal in the 63rd minute for St. Olaf (14-1-2, 8-0-2 MIAC). The tie moved the Oles, who were ranked No. 4 in this week's United Soccer Coaches Region IX poll, to 13-0-2 in their last 15 games.
After Bethel University's upset win over No. 23-ranked Carleton College and St. Catherine University's victory against Gustavus Adolphus College, St. Kate's holds a one-point lead over St. Olaf and a two-point lead over Carleton in a three-team race atop the MIAC standings. The Oles, who are looking for their first-ever MIAC regular-season title, will win the title outright with a victory over the Wildcats next Saturday.
Ponce gave the Auggies an early lead less than six minutes in with a left-footed shot into the lower-left corner from the right side of the box after a throw-in from Allison Hookom reach Augsburg's leading scorer. The goal was Ponce's 15th of the season, tying her with junior
Emily Johnson for second among MIAC players, and ended St. Olaf's program-record shutout streak at 899:53.
The Oles were forced to wait until Payne's goal in the 63rd minute to pull level. Senior
Katie Beaudry got a head to a corner kick by classmate
Cat Duffy-Shaw but redirected the ball back out of the box and into the path of Payne, who scored on an arching one-timer for the game-tying tally.
St. Olaf had the best chance to pull ahead after Payne's goal when Johnson got open for a shot from distance in the 81st minute, but Claire Smother got her hands to the effort to push it out for a corner. The Oles outshot the Auggies by a 16-8 margin overall and a 9-3 count in shots on goal, while earning nine of the game's 10 corner kicks.
Smothers made eight saves in the tie for Augsburg, while first year
Charlotte Percy had two stops for St. Olaf.
The Oles will close out the regular season by hosting St. Kate's on Saturday, Nov. 1 at 1 p.m.
