Oles run winning streak to 13 with four-set victory over UW-Stout

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College volleyball team picked up its 13th consecutive victory with a 23-25, 25-19, 25-16, 25-17 win over UW-Stout in non-conference play on Friday evening at Skoglund Center.

St. Olaf (17-6) recovered from losing the opening set for the second night in a row to claim a four-set win over UW-Stout (14-7) for its fourth victory in a row in the series dating back to 2018. The Oles' 13-match winning streak is the program's longest since a run of 15 in a row from Sept. 18 through Oct. 21, 2009. St. Olaf received votes in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) national poll.

Junior Lilah Van Scoyoc led three Oles in double figures in kills with 15 to go with three block assists. Junior Evelyn Kreft tallied 12 kills with a .370 attack percentage, while junior Maren Miller had 10 kills on 17 errorless swings to hit .588. Miller was also in on four of St. Olaf's eight blocks in the victory.

Senior Paige Christophersen logged her 11th double-double of the season with 27 assists, 10 digs, and a pair of kills, while junior Sophie Saxton added 20 assists and three aces. Senior Morgan Ryan led three Oles with 10+ digs with 24 to go with four assists and an ace. Ryan's 24-dig performance moved the senior up to third in program history with 1,837 career digs.

St. Olaf jumped out to a 5-0 lead to start the match, but UW-Stout went on to win the opening set, 25-23. The Blue Devils opened up a 22-19 lead late on with a 3-0 mini-run before the Oles got within a point at 24-23, but Sloan Horgan finished off the set with a kill for the visitors. Ryan made 12 digs in the opening set alone.

Both teams hit over .390 in the second set, but St. Olaf got 10 combined kills from Miller and Kreft to win the set and even the match at a set apiece. UW-Stout won the first two points before the Oles rattled off the next 11 – 10 on the serve of Krause – to build an 11-2 lead. St. Olaf led by at least three for the remainder of the set in a 25-19 set win.

The Oles hit just .182 in the third set but rode their defense, which limited the Blue Devils to four kills and a -.080 attack percentage, to a 25-16 win. Already leading 13-9, St. Olaf won five consecutive points to open up a nine-point cushion in a set that saw five Oles record multiple kills.

Saxton delivered two aces as part of a 12-3 start to the fourth set for St. Olaf, which led for the remainder of the set after an early 1-1 tie. Van Scoyoc registered five kills in the set, as the Oles held the Blue Devils to a .067 attack percentage to seal the four-set win. For the match, St. Olaf held UW-Stout's Brooke McCune – who entered the night in the top 25 nationally in kills per set (4.16) – to 11 kills on a .071 clip.

St. Olaf will return to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play with a trip to the College of Saint Benedict on Friday, Oct. 24 for a 7 p.m. start.
