MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The fourth-ranked St. Olaf College men's soccer team scored twice in the final 3:01 to come away with an improbable 2-2 tie against seventh-ranked Augsburg University in a top-10 clash on Saturday at Edor Nelson Field.
Augsburg (15-1-2, 6-1-2 MIAC) got two goals from Carver Tierney to build a 2-0 lead and held onto the two-goal cushion until the final minutes. Senior
Caspar Olseth gave St. Olaf (14-1-3, 9-0-1 MIAC) hope with 3:01 to go before junior
Ryan Bechtel scored the game-tying goal with 1:09 to go to keep the Oles' unbeaten streak in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) regular-season play – now at 32 games (26-0-6) – alive.
St. Olaf was ranked No. 4 and Augsburg was ranked No. 7 in this week's United Soccer Coaches national poll. Both teams were also ranked in the top eight in the most recent NCAA Power Index, with the Auggies at No. 2 and the Oles at No. 8.
Tierney, who spent time with Division I and II programs before transferring to Augsburg, opened the scoring for the Auggies in the 36th minute by tucking a right-footed shot into the lower-right corner after a corner kick was recycled into the box. The forward proceeded to double the hosts' lead in the 57th minute by slotting the ball home after an attempted clearance ricocheted to Tierney in the box.
With St. Olaf still down by two in the closing minutes, Olseth – a former forward who plays mostly at center back – fired the ball into the roof of the net with his left foot off a corner kick by senior
Robi Buzakovic in the 87th minute to give the Oles hope of a late rally. The goal was Olseth's second of the season, while Buzakovic picked up his eighth assist.
Less than two minutes later, Bechtel scored his team-leading eighth goal of the season off a cross from sophomore
Lucas Montera to bring St. Olaf level. The goal was the second vital late goal in five days for Bechtel, who scored the lone goal of the game in the 77th minute of Tuesday's win over Hamline University.
St. Olaf held slight advantages in shots (16-13) and shots on goal (7-6) in the game and had nine of the game's 12 corner kicks. Senior
Jack Hobday made four saves for the Oles before sophomore
Beckett Carlson entered the game after Olseth's goal and was credited with the tie. Christian Hodges made five saves for the Auggies.
In its regular-season finale, St. Olaf will host UW-Platteville in non-conference play on Tuesday, Oct. 28 at 3:30 p.m.
